Louisville, Ky. Three runners from The Citadel traveled to the Derby City this weekend with all three posting personal record times as the Bulldogs competed at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships Saturday. Sophomore Katheryn Gatewood led the way in the 6k race with a time of 23:40.
Gatewood's time of 23:40 is the second-fastest 6k time in school history, second only to Clara Crossman's 23:25 time set at the 2003 NCAA Southeast Regional Championships in Greenville, N.C. Gatewood placed 165th out of the 225 runners competing at the NCAA meet.
Sophomore Natalie Wolin ran 24:01 in the race, finishing 183rd. That mark is the fourth-fastest time in the Bulldog record books.
Junior Sarah Strickland, who ran 25:03 at the 2005 NCAA Southeast Regional Championships in Greenville, N.C., finished the 2007 race in 24:15 as she finished 195th. Her 24:15 mark places her seventh in the school's record books, just one second behind current teammate Erin Ritter's time of 24:14 from the 2005 NCAA Southeast Regional Championships.
Saturday's race marked the first time that Gatewood and Wolin ran the NCAA 6k race in their collegiate careers.
The meet was held at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer Park in Louisville, Ky. The 2008 NCAA Southeast Regional Championships are scheduled to be held in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The race marks the end of The Citadel's 2007 cross country season. Gatewood, Strickland and Wolin were the top three runners for the team in every meet throughout the season and the Cadets have much to look forward to as this year's young squad featured no seniors en route to a program-best eighth place finish at the Southern Conference Championships.
The Bulldogs will now turn their attention to indoor track season, with the first meet of the season scheduled for Dec. 1 in Clemson, S.C.
