The Citadel?s Mike Adams Garners Second SoCon Player of the Week Honor

Spartanburg, S.C. The Citadel kicker Mike Adams earned his second Southern Conference Player of the Week honor this season after his school record 10 extra point performance in a 70-28 thrashing of VMI in The Military Classic of the South on Saturday. The SoCon office bestowed the conference honor to a Citadel player for the fifth time this season Monday afternoon.

Adams 10 extra points in the game sets a school record for The Citadel. The old mark of eight extra points in a game was set on three separate occasions with the last being Jeff Trinh putting eight through the uprights against Lees-McRae in 1993. Steve Bailey matched that performance against Davidson in 1974 and the first to set the mark was Jim Leber in 1970, also against VMI.

Adams' 10 extra points gave him 56 on the year, also a school record. The previous record for PATs in a season was 46, set by Justin Skinner in 1994 and matched by Adams on Nov. 10 in a 42-31 win over Elon.

Adams foot helped The Citadel to a historic 70-28 victory over VMI, the most points the Bulldogs have scored on VMI in the 87-year history of the rivalry battle. The 70 points was also the most points scored by any team at VMI's Alumni Memorial Field, topping the Keydets' 69-point performance in a 69-0 win over Central Florida in 1982.

The Citadel has earned four other SoCon Player of the Week honors this season, beginning with John Synovec's two blocked kicks in The Citadel's 76-0 rout of Webber International on Sept. 10. The SoCon honored Duran Lawson following his leading the Bulldogs to a 54-51 overtime victory over archrival Furman on Oct. 13 after trailing 41-27 in the fourth quarter.

Bart Blanchard came in after Lawson injured his knee and threw for 370 yards in a 42-31 win over No. 19 Elon, which earned him the SoCon Freshman of the Week honor. The fourth honor for the Bulldogs this season was also awarded to Adams when he kicked a career-long 49-yard field goal en route to a 37-31 win at Western Carolina.

The Citadel concluded their 2007 season with the win over VMI, finishing the year with a 7-4 mark (4-3 in the Southern Conference). That marked the first year the Bulldogs recorded at least seven wins since 1992.
