Charleston, S.C. Senior first baseman Zach Brown was named Southern Conference Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 19. The Greenville, S.C. native is the first player to receive the league's honor in 2007 as he batted .400 during The Crab House Shootout presented by Trademark Properties and helped lead the Dogs to a 7-6 victory over top-ranked South Carolina.
Brown went 4-for-10 in the three-day tournament including a double, triple and three RBI while scoring twice. The senior knocked in two runs against Richmond, giving the Dogs the lead in a close game with the Spiders. His double to right field in the seventh inning plated two to make it 6-5. The Spiders were able to come back and tie it up in the eighth, but Brown came through again in the 10th as he blasted a lead-off triple and tagged up on a sac fly to score the game-winner. Brown matched his personal best three hits against Richmond as he batted 3-for-4 on the evening.
Brown notched an RBI and scored the tying run against No. 1 South Carolina. His RBI-single in the sixth pulled the Dogs within four, 6-2. With The Citadel down by one, Brown was hit by a pitch to lead off the eighth, moved to second on a sac bunt and then raced home on an error to even the score with the Gamecocks, setting up the opportunity for the Dogs to pull off the upset.
This is the first time that Brown has received SoCon Player of the Week. The senior has a .381 average in The Citadel's first six games, including a double, a triple and two home runs for 17 total bases. Brown has six RBI along with a .810 slugging percentage on the season.
