The Citadel's Douglas Leads 2007 South Carolina Hall of Fame Class

Columbia, S.C. - Former Citadel quarterback Jack Douglas will be among eight inductees into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame in May.

Joining Douglas in the Hall of Fame will be former major league baseball players Bill Spiers and Jerry Martin, ex-NBA player Gary Gregor and former NFL standout Max Runager; ex-Clemson soccer coach I.M. Ibrahim and high school track coach Catherine Lempesis; and horse racing's Cot Campbell, owner of Dogwood Stable.

The Hall of Fame's banquet will be held May 21 at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center.

Douglas led The Citadel's football team to a Southern Conference championship and No. 1 national ranking in 1992, and finished his career as the leading rushing QB in Division I-AA history with 3,674 yards. The Citadel beat South Carolina, Arkansas, Navy and Army during his tenure.

Spiers, a native of Cameron, played at Clemson and for 12 years with the Brewers and Astros. Martin played basketball and baseball at Furman and played 11 seasons for the Phillies and Cubs. Gregor played baskeball for Frank McGuire at USC and went on to the NBA. Runager, an Orangeburg native, punted for the Gamecocks before earning two Super Bowl rings with San Francisco.

Ibrahim won two NCAA titles as Clemson's soccer coach, while Lempesis led Spring Valley High School to nine straight state track titles from 1986-94. Campbell pioneered partner-ownership in horse racing in the U.S., and his horse Summer Squall won the 1990 Preakness Stakes and finished second in the Kentucky Derby.
