Statesboro, Ga.- The Georgia Southern Eagles (1-4-0,1-0) had a late scoring spree to lead them past The Citadel (1-6-0, 0-1) ,6-0 in Southern Conference action Wednesday night.
The Eagles came out strong in the first half and notched their first goal in the 28th minute when freshman Jenny Anderson one-touched a winner after chasing a loose ball inside the six.
Georgia Southern produced another 10 shots in the second stanza, half of which found the back of the net.
In the 47th minute, junior Ashley Toussaint broke away from the defense, beat the goalkeeper and made a shot from inside the six. Six minutes later, it was Toussaint again beating the defense up the middle and firing a winner from six yards out, giving the Eagles a 3-0 advantage. In the 68th minute, the Eagles went up 4-0 after a crossed corner kick bounced off a Bulldog defender and made its way in for an own goal.
Sophomore Heather Smith notched her first goal of the season in the 76th minute. Her 40-yard penalty kick found the back of the net giving the Eagles a 5-0 lead. Thirteen minutes later, junior Audrey Brown scored her first season goal for a 6-0 advantage.
The Eagles fired 20 shots, 15 on goal, to the Bulldogs one shot from sophomore Rachelle Ornelas.
Starting goal keeper, Britni Bunnell made nine saves in the contest. Georgia Southern's Laura-Ashley Harris earned the win.
“Britni made some great saves for us the first half,” said head coach Bob Winch. “But we needed to continue to make saves the second half and we should be able to defend 15 shots better.”
“I am disappointed in our start of conference play, but we will work hard this week in preparation for USC Upstate,” said Winch.
The Bulldogs will be back in action when they host USC Upstate on Friday, September 21 at 5 p.m. For more information on Bulldog soccer, visit www.CitadelSports.com.
