Charleston, S.C. The Citadel Volleyball team will look for their first conference win of the season when they host Chattanooga and Samford this weekend at McAlister Field House. The Bulldogs host Chattanooga on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 3 p.m. followed by Samford on Sunday, Oct. 19 at 2 p.m.
The Bulldogs (6-13, 0-7 Southern) come into the weekend after losing two disappointing road matches against UNC Greensboro and Elon. The Citadel fell to both teams in three straight sets, but look to redeem themselves this weekend against Chattanooga (10-11, 5-2 SoCon) and Samford (18-2, 7-0 SoCon).
“We are midway through our season,” said Head Coach Carolyn Geiger. “Our two opponents this weekend, Chattanooga and Samford, are gaining momentum in the conference. This will be our first meeting with Samford, but as of today, they are the only team in our conference undefeated. Chattanooga will also be a tough opponent.
“They will both run a fast-paced offense. Samford has several offensive threats on their team, while Chattanooga has one of the top defensive players in the nation. We will have to play error-free volleyball this weekend, but I know we can play well against both opponents.”
Chattanooga comes into the weekend after going 2-0 last weekend against Wofford and Furman. The Mocs defeated Wofford, 3-2, and Furman, 3-1. Against The Citadel, Chattanooga is undefeated in all 14 meetings, claiming the series, 14-0. The Bulldogs look to earn their first win in school history over Chattanooga on Saturday.
Samford, who sits at the top of the Southern Conference, comes into the weekend after going 2-0 last weekend against Furman and Wofford. The Samford Bulldogs defeated both Furman and Wofford in three straight sets. The Citadel and SoCon newcomer Samford will meet for the first time on Sunday, giving each team a chance to take control of the series.
