Charleston, S.C. The Citadel Football will travel to Boone, N.C. this weekend to take on three-time defending FCS national champion Appalachian State in the Mountaineers' first Southern Conference game of the season on Saturday, Oct. 4 at Kidd Brewer Stadium. Kick-off is set for 3:04 p.m. as the Mountaineer Homecoming game will be broadcasted on SportSouth with play-by-play announcer Tom Werme and analyst Sam Wyche.
The No. 12-ranked Bulldogs are 3-1 overall and 1-0 in SoCon action, coming off a win against Western Carolina at Sansom Field at Johnson Hagood Stadium last Saturday. The Citadel, who is currently in third place in SoCon standings, is looking to defeat the Mountaineers for the first time in Boone since 1992 when they shutout ASU, 25-0. The last Bulldog victory over the Mountaineers was on Sept. 27, 2003 in a 24-21 final in Charleston.
Appalachian State, ranked No. 2 in national standings, is coming off a victory over Presbyterian last week at Kidd Brewer Stadium. The Mountaineers are 2-2 on the season and is the only team in the SoCon who has not played a conference game.
The series between these two teams dates back to 1972 with a Bulldog 28-21 victory in Boone. However, the Mountaineers lead the series, 25-11, having claimed 15-of-18 wins in Boone and 10-of-18 in Charleston.
