EAST LANSING, Mich. The Bulldog Basketball team heads to East Lansing, Mich. to face their second Big Ten opponent of the season in the Spartans of Michigan State. The Citadel will face Michigan State on Wednesday, Dec. 17 at 8 p.m. in the Jack Breslin Student Events Center.
Michigan State is the first ranked team the Bulldogs have faced this year, standing at No. 19 in the Associated Press poll and No. 22 in the ESPN/USA Today poll. The last ranked team the Bulldogs faced on the road was Maryland on Nov. 27, 2002.
After falling to UC Davis Monday night, the Bulldogs look to find their rhythm with a victory over Michigan State. The Citadel stands at an even 5-5 on the season, with a 1-1 split in conference action. Cameron Wells and Demetrius Nelson lead the Bulldog offense. Wells leads the team in four different categories, averaging 15.8 points and 6.6 rebounds. He also leads the team in assists and steals. Nelson is averaging 12.8 points and 5.3 boards.
As a team, the Bulldogs are shooting 43.4 percent from the field and 30.7 percent from the 3-point line. The Bulldogs are pretty solid from the foul line, shooting 71.9 percent. The Citadel is second in the Southern Conference in scoring defense, holding their opponents to 64.3 points a game. In the Southern Conference, the Bulldogs lead in rebounding defense, holding opponents to 29.9 rebounds a game.
Michigan State is 6-2 this season and they hope to keep their winning streak alive before they enter conference play. The Spartans enter the game on a two-game winning streak after defeating Bradley and Alcorn State. On offense, the Spartans are led by Raymar Morgan, Chris Allen and Kalin Lucas. Morgan is averaging 15.8 points, followed by Allen with 12.1. Lucas is averaging 11.5 points and leads the team in assists and steals.
As a team, the Spartans are shooting 48 percent from the field and 37.7 percent from the 3-point line. The Spartans are shooting 65.3 percent from the foul line. Michigan State's defense has held opponents to 69.2 points a game.
The Citadel and Michigan State are no strangers, having met once before. Their first meeting was on Nov.12, 2006 in East Lansing, Mich. The Spartans defeated the Bulldogs, 73-41, leading the series 1-0. The Citadel looks to end their losing streak against Michigan State and the Big Ten. Against Big Ten opponents, the Bulldogs stand at 0-5 with losses to Indiana, Iowa, Michigan State and Northwestern.
