Charleston, S.C. Former Bulldog running back Lyvonia “Stump” Mitchell, Class of '81, was named Wednesday the assistant head coach-running backs for the Washington Redskins. Mitchell will replace Earnest Bynum, who was with the Redskins from 2004-2007.
Mitchell spent the last nine seasons as the running backs coach with the Seattle Seahawks where Zorn served as the quarterbacks coach before accepting a position with the Redskins. Prior to joining the coaching ranks of the National Football League, Mitchell was the head coach at Morgan State University from 1996-98. He also served as offensive coordinator at Morgan in 1995 before being promoted to head coach.
The Citadel's all-time leader for most rushing attempts in a season (291), rushing yards in a season (1,647) and rushing yards in a career (4,062) played for the Bulldogs from 1977-1980. He was an Associated Press third team All-America choice in 1980, a member of the All-Southern Conference team his senior year as well as being named the conference's Player of the Year. Mitchell was also selected as the State Amateur Athlete of the Year in 1980. He continued his career as a standout NFL running back for the St. Louis and Phoenix Cardinals from 1981 to 1989 and holds the franchise record with 11,988 total yards. Mitchell is one of only six former Bulldog football players who have their jersey retired at The Citadel.
