
The Citadel Men Finish Sixth, Women Place Ninth at Eye Opener

Spartanburg, S.C. Junior Brendan Kight led the Bulldogs overall with a time of 27:11 and finishing 34th as The Citadel cross country teams opened the 2008 cross country season at the Eye Opener Meet in Spartanburg. Junior Katheryn Gatewood led the women with a time of 20:02, placing 59th.
Kight's time of 27:11 led the men's team in the 8k race, finishing more than a minute and a half in front of the next Bulldog men's runner. Senior Zach Johnson followed Kight with a time of 28:30, placing 89th while sophomore Chris Fallis finished 97th overall with a time of 28:57. The men's team's sixth place finish marked wins over the College of Charleston and Wofford.
Gatewood's time of 20:02 in the 5k race led the Bulldog women with junior Natalie Wolin closely following her with a 20:09 performance as she finished 64th. Both Gatewood and Wolin were the top two finishers for The Citadel at the 2007 NCAA Southeast Regional Championships in Louisville, Ky.
The women's team marked the day with a higher team finish than Southern Conference foes Georgia Southern and Wofford while both teams finished better than in-state Division I foes Presbyterian and South Carolina State.
The Citadel returns to action next weekend when the teams travel to Annapolis, Md. to compete in the Navy Invitational, hosted by the Naval Academy.
