CHARLESTON, S.C. Art Musselman, a key player from The Citadel's famed “Blitz Kids” era in basketball, will have his jersey honored during halftime of the Bulldogs' home game with UNC Greensboro on Jan. 31.

It will be the first time in The Citadel's 108 years of playing basketball that a jersey will be honored.
A key player for Coach Norm Sloan during The Citadel's famed “Blitz Kids” era from 1957-60, Musselman, who wore jersey No. 33, was a member of the team that the U.S. Rubber Company named the Most Improved Team in America (1957) and was presented with the George Mikan Award. He also led the Bulldogs to the 1959 Southern Conference Championship game, where they fell to West Virginia University and their standout player, Jerry West. That marked the only time The Citadel has advanced to the league's championship game.
A three-time All-Southern Conference and All-State selection, Musselman was voted the state's Outstanding Basketball Player in 1957. He owned the school's all-time scoring record (1,504 points) for 25 years and currently ranks second behind Regan Truesdale and is also third in career rebounding (750).
A member of The Citadel Class of 1960, Musselman paced the team in scoring in 1958 (15.7) and in 1959 (16.1), and averaged 16.0 points during his illustrious career. He was named most valuable player of the 1958 Senior Bowl Tournament in Mobile, Ala. and the 1958 Citadel Invitational Tournament.
A member of the U.S. Marine Corps All-Star Team in 1961 and '62, Musselman later served as head basketball coach at Presbyterian College. He also was an assistant coach to Norm Sloan at North Carolina State University, where he was a member of the Wolfpack's 1974 NCAA Championship team and three Atlantic Coast Conference Championship teams.
Musselman was inducted into the Huntington County (IN) Athletic Hall of Fame and The Citadel Athletic Hall of Fame in 1981. He and his wife, Carol, reside in Knightdale, North Carolina.
The honor was initiated by current coach Ed Conroy and jointly approved by Citadel President Lt Gen John Rosa and Director of Athletics Larry Leckonby. It will be the second banner in McAlister Field House unfurled by The Citadel as former coach Les Robinson was recognized with the first one last February.
