The Series
The Citadel (3-4 overall, 1-3 SoCon) will face Samford (3-4 overall, 1-3 SoCon) for only the third time in the programs' history on Saturday. The all-time series is tied 1-1. The first meeting took place Nov. 4, 1989 in Charleston. The Citadel Bulldogs claimed a 35-16 victory. After Samford joined the Southern Conference in 2008, the Bulldogs met again, this time in Birmingham where Samford upset The Citadel, 28-10, on Oct. 25.
The Citadel
The Citadel is coming off a thrilling 38-28 Parents Day victory over Furman at home last Saturday. It was the first conference win of the season for the Bulldogs. Backup quarter Miguel Starks shined in his first collegiate start as he was responsible for 327 yards of offense. He connected on 14-of-19 passes with no interceptions for 183 yards and one touchdown, while adding 144 yards on the ground to go along with four rushing touchdowns. The Bulldogs totaled 296 yards rushing against the Paladins, the most of any Citadel team since a Nov. 6, 2004 win against Chattanooga.
Samford
Samford is coming off of a bye week. The Bulldogs dropped their two previous SoCon games to Chattanooga and at Furman. Early in the season, Samford took FBS opponent Central Florida to the wire, eventually falling, 28-24. They got on the winning side of things when they downed Jacksonville and Miles College at home. The Bulldogs split their opening SoCon games, falling at #10 Appalachian State, 20-7 and defeating Western Carolina, 16-3 at home.
Hall of Fame Day and HallowScream
The Citadel will honor the five newest members of the Hall of Fame at Saturday's game. The Bulldogs will also honor Halloween with kids dressing up gaining admission into the game for free and Trick-or-Treat bags being distributed by Coburg Dairy in the concourse.
The Citadel has played a football game on Halloween on 10 previous occasions, dating back to 1914. The Bulldogs are 4-6 when playing on Halloween and 2-4 when playing on the holiday in Charleston. The Citadel has won the last two of three games played on Oct. 31. The most recent Halloween game was in 1998 against Hofstra at Johnson Hagood Stadium. The Citadel lost, 32-30. However, they claimed Halloween victories in 1987 against Western Carolina and 1991 against Presbyterian. The other two Oct. 31 victories came in 1959 against William and Marry on the road and in 1925 against Mercer in Macon, Ga.
