Bulldog Football Welcomes Wofford for 2009 Homecoming

Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel Football will welcome the Wofford Terriers to Johnson Hagood Stadium for Homecoming on Saturday, Nov. 7. The game will kick off before a live televised audience at 3:05 p.m. and can be viewed on SportSouth. Bulldog fans can also listen to the game live on Bulldog Insider at www.CitadelSports.com or on ESPN Radio 910 The Team with the Voice of the Bulldogs Darren Goldwater and color analyst Walt Nadzak.

The Series:
The Citadel (4-4 overall; 2-3 SoCon) and Wofford (2-6 overall; 1-4) will meet for the 62nd time in the programs' history on Saturday. The series dates back to Nov. 4, 1916 when The Citadel defeated Wofford, 37-0, in Charleston. The Bulldogs lead the series, 40-20-1; however, The Citadel has not claimed a victory over the Terriers in the last 10 matchups.  The most recent Bulldog victory was when The Citadel topped Wofford, 20-14, in Spartanburg on Sept. 12, 1998. The two teams have played 36 times in Charleston, with the Bulldogs having claimed wins in 27.

The Bulldogs:
The Citadel is coming off a come-from-behind victory over Samford last week at Johnson Hagood Stadium. The Bulldogs have won two consecutive conference games and holds a 2-3 record in the SoCon after claiming their first SoCon win against Furman two weeks ago. Their losses were to No. 10 Appalachian State in overtime and on the road at No. 10 Elon and Western Carolina.

Both Citadel conference wins were a result of impressive performances by the No. 2 and No. 3 quarterbacks. Redshirt freshman Miguel Starks, in his first start, recorded 327 yards of offense and was responsible for five Bulldog touchdowns, including a school record of four rushing TDs in the Bulldogs' 38-28 victory over Furman. He threw for 183 yards and rushed for 144.

Last week, freshman walk-on Tommy Edwards replaced an injured Starks late in the second quarter and rallied the Bulldogs from a 10-0 halftime deficit to a 28-16 victory over Samford. Edwards completed 10-of-20 passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns. He did not throw any interceptions and was never sacked. The Citadel defense held Samford scoreless for almost three quarters, totaled 11 tackles for a loss of 41 yards, recorded two interceptions for 112 return yards and blocked a punt to hold Samford to 35 yards rushing and extend the Bulldogs' win streak.

The Terriers:
Wofford is coming off a 34-6 loss to No. 6 Elon on last Saturday at Gibbs Stadium. The Terriers defeated Western Carolina two weeks ago, 35-26, for their only conference win of the season. The win over the Catamounts broke a four-game losing streak and was the second victory of the season; the first was a 42-14 win over Charleston Southern University. Wofford leads the conference in rushing offense (258.0 yards per game).

The Citadel Homecoming:
The Citadel's first homecoming game was reported to have taken place on Oct. 25, 1924. The game was played in Hampton Park, now located adjacent to The Citadel's campus. Since 1953, the Bulldogs hold a 32-21 record in Homecoming games with their most recent victory on Nov. 15, 2008 against Chattanooga. All-America wide receiver Andre Roberts scored the game-winning touchdown on a punt return to claim the 24-21 victory, ending a six-game losing streak. Since 1953, The Citadel has played Wofford on homecoming on just two previous occasions. The first matchup between the Bulldogs and Terriers on homecoming was in 1978 when The Citadel claimed a 35-17 victory and the second was in 2003 when Wofford defeated the Bulldogs, 42-16.
