Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel looks to rebound from a loss on Thursday evening against Davidson College against Georgia Southern when they welcome the Eagles to McAlister Field House on Saturday afternoon. In search of their first win in Southern Conference action, The Citadel will tip-off with Georgia Southern at 3:05 p.m.
The Citadel has a 5-5 record in Southern Conference openers dating back to the 2000-01 season. Furthermore, in 2009-10 the Bulldogs have emerged victorious, following a loss, on all three occasions.
Georgia Southern holds a 24-17 edge in the all-time series between the two schools, despite a sweep of both games by The Citadel last season. The Bulldogs won by scores of 84-75, at McAlister Field House, and walked away with a 74-53 victory at Hanner Fieldhouse.
LETHAL TANDEM: The backcourt duo of Zach Urbanus and Cameron Wells, who each scored 23 points, was not enough against Southern Conference rival Davidson College who won 74-63 at McAlister Field House on Thursday evening. Wells notched his fourth 20-point contest of the season while Urbanus eclipsed the mark for the second time in as many contests. Meanwhile, Will Archambault recorded a team-high 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting and knocking down 6-of-9 three point attempts.
Urabanus and Wells were the only Bulldogs (5-4, 0-1 SoCon) to reach double digit points. Urbanus finished with a 8-for-12 showing from the field, including 5-of-9 from 3-point range. He currently stands with 178 career 3-pointers, 13 shy of Ryan Nesbit for fourth place. Meanwhile, Wells' 23 points, on 9-of-16 shooting, moves him ahead of Kent Hill and Noy Castillo on the all-time list into 20th. Joe Wolfinger shared team-high honors in rebounds with Wells, grabbing eight, while Matt Clark chipped in seven caroms. Cosmo Morabbi led the the team with four assists. The Citadel struggled shooting the ball, hitting 24-of-61 in the game (39.3%) which included a stark 6-of-25 from beyond the arc.
Along with Archambault, Jake Cohen (20 pts.) and J.P. Kuhlman (19 pts.) scored in double figures for Davidson. The trio combined to hit 23-of-38 (60.5%) from the field and 13-for-21 (61.9%) from 3-point range. As a unit, the Wildcats converted 27-of-56 shots (48.2%) for the game, including 14-of-27 field goals in the second half. They managed to hit 55.6% (15-27) from 3-point range, which made the difference in the contest.
Leading 36-30 at the half, Davidson extended the lead to 50-35 over the first 4:28 of the second half on an Archambault trey. The Citadel answered with a 13-7 run over the next 6:45 to pull within nine, 57-48, but would draw no closer. With the victory the Wildcats improve to (2-5, 1-0) on the season.
LAST TIME TWO REACHED 20 POINTS?: The last time that a pair of Bulldog players reached 20 points in the same game was on three separate occasions in the 2008-09 season. The following is a graphic of the last four times that The Citadel has had two players with 20+ points:
TOP 20 ALL-TIME: Cameron Wells ascended to 20th among the Citadel's all-time list of 1,000 point scorers after a 23-point outing against Davidson on December 3rd. He also eclipsed the 20-point plateau for the 20th time in his career and fourth during the 2009-10 campaign. Cameron, who entered the season with 946 career points in 63 contests, has scored 160 points this to this point.
URBANUS CONTINUES HIS STREAK: Zach Urbanus entered the 2009-10 campaign at seventh place on the all-time list of Bulldog 3-point shooters, with 148 total. By virtue of connecting on 148-of-335 attempts, Urbanus trails only Leon Bryant (46.3%) in 3-Point FG Percentage Leaders. Along with teammate Austin Dahn, who sits in eighth for his career, the tandem is making their way up the list of prolific outside shooters. Urbanus hit his stride of late, connecting on 30 three-point attempts this season, 25 have come over the course of the last seven contests. Furthermore, he has hit 41% (25-61) during that span. As for Dahn, who has knocked down his three from beyond the arc, the Hispanic College Fund Challenge was his breakthrough.
(12/3) EAGLES FALL IN SoCON OPENER: The College of Charleston shot 66.7 percent in the second half and 50 percent overall to overcome a sloppy game in grounding the Eagles 68-59. Georgia Southern controlled the tempo and had effectively shut down the Cougar offense in the first half, but was unable to utilize a sluggish offensive night to secure the win. The Eagles rattled the Cougars in the Carolina First Arena with solid defense, forcing 23 turnovers for the game, 10 over the College of Charleston average. Georgia Southern finished the game with 17 steals.
Ben Drayton III (St. Marys, Ga.) scored nine points in the first half and finished with 15 on the night. Willie Powers III (Gainesville, Fla.) contributed 13 from the bench and Antonio Hanson (Ft. Worth, Texas) had eight points, including two big three's in the second half.
The Cougars' Andrew Goudelock scored 14 of his game-high 19 points in the second half to key the Cougars comeback. Charleston had four players in double figure scoring with Donavan Monroe adding 16, Jeremy Simmons 10, and Willis Hall scoring eight off the bench in the second half for 12 total. Simmons led all rebounders with 13. The Cougars had a collective 11 blocks for the game.
The Cougars were shooting 45 percent in the first half, but their percentage plummeted as they hit only three of their 11 attempts in the last seven minutes of the first half and were held scoreless for the last four. Georgia Southern erased a seven-point Charleston lead with an 10-0 run, and took a 28-25 lead into the locker room. A layup and three by Drayton keyed the run with Drayton's three-pointer with a tenth of a second left in the half giving the Eagles the advantage.
In the second half, Georgia Southern had a five-point lead, 36-31 at the 16:46 mark when both teams went through a three-minute stretch unable to score a basket. For the next nine minutes, the teams traded baskets and watched the lead go back and forth through four ties and eight lead changes. Goudelock hit two free throws with five minutes left to put Charleston ahead 55-54. Goudelock would add five more points before the final buzzer and the Cougars would pull away with the win.
The loss snapped Georgia Southern's two-game win streak and left the Eagles still looking for their first road win of the 2009-10 season.
