CHARLESTON, S.C. – After leading the Bulldogs to their ninth-straight victory, sophomore guard Cameron Wells has been named the Southern Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. The Citadel has earned the honor for the second consecutive week and it is the first weekly honor for Wells. The award is voted on by the league's basketball sports information directors.
The Houston, Texas native led the Bulldogs to back-to-back SoCon wins over Appalachian State (78-73) and College of Charleston (72-58) this past week, where he led the team in scoring in both games. He notched a career-high 30 points in the Bulldogs' overtime win over the Mountaineers and posted a game-high 18 points against the Cougars. He tied his personal best with seven assists against Appalachian State.
Wells averaged 24.0 points and 4.5 assists in 70 minutes of action last week. The sophomore shot 58.1 percent from the field and was 12-for-12 from the foul line. His 15.7 scoring average ranks him fifth in the league in scoring. He ranks sixth in assists, averaging 3.1 and sits at seventh in the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio.
Other Southern Conference nominees included Appalachian State's Kellen Brand, Chattanooga's Stephen McDowell, College of Charleston's Andrew Goudelock, Davidson's Stephen Curry, UNC Greensboro's Mikko Koivisto, Samford's Josh Davis, Western Carolina's Harouna Mutombo and Wofford's Noah Dahlman.
Riding a nine-game winning streak, the Bulldogs look to continue their success when they head to Davidson, N.C. to face the Wildcats on Thursday night at 7 p.m. in Belk Arena. The Citadel sits in second place in the South Division, while Davidson is in control of the South Division. The Bulldogs will then return home for back-to-back conference games against Furman and Wofford before concluding the regular season with Georgia Southern.
