Jonathan Brick Receives Prestigious Honor

CHARLESTON. S.C.  Senior guard Jonathan Brick was presented the Society of Cincinnati Award for his academic achievements and leadership in the Corps of Cadets on Friday during the military dress parade. The award is given out annually to a senior cadet who has excelled in the Corps and has shown outstanding leadership.

The Medal of the Society of the Cincinnati of South Carolina is given to the senior cadet officer who exemplifies the combined qualities of a good soldier and a good citizen. The cadet must possess the characteristics of the patriots who fought to obtain America's freedom and which the Society pledges to perpetuate.

“We are excited that Jon has been recognized as the 2009 recipient of the Society of Cincinnati award,” said Bulldog Head Coach Ed Conroy. “Jon exemplifies what we look for in our cadet-student-athletes. He has embraced the many parts of The Citadel education while flourishing in the classroom, in the Corps of Cadets, and on the court. Our program has benefited tremendously from his leadership.”

The award is named in honor of Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus, a Roman general who peacefully returned to his farm after defending Rome, who exemplified these citizen-soldier qualities. George Washington, Alexander Hamilton and Marquis de Lafayette were charter members of the Society.

The senior has been a member of the Bulldog Basketball team for four years and has been a steady influence on the Bulldog team. He is the captain of this year's team and a member of the Southern Conference All-Academic Team. Brick leads by example with his competitiveness and his work ethic. He has been a major contributor during his career and his play this season has been a big factor in the Bulldogs' success.

Brick is a business administration major and is the First Battalion executive officer. The Baltimore, Md. native will graduate in May 2009. The senior was the recipient of the Southern Conference Commissioner's Academic Medal and The Citadel Foundation Leadership Scholarship. He is a Gold Star student and has been a member of the Dean's List every semester, while also being named to the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, the Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society for Business and the National Scholars Honor Society.
