Charleston, S.C. The Citadel's cadet-student-athletes posted impressive stats in the classroom for the 2008 fall semester as the 16 teams and 314 athletes collectively earned an overall grade point average higher than that of the Corps of Cadets. The Bulldog teams collected a cumulative average of 2.86, while the Corps averaged 2.82.
A total of 124 cadet-student-athletes made the dean's list, while 45 earned Gold Star honors. Dean's List recognition is given to those students registered for 12 or more semester hours whose grade point ratio is 3.2 or higher with no grade below a C for the previous semester's work. Gold Stars are awarded to Dean's List students who have a grade point ratio of 3.7 or higher for the semester's work.
“We are very excited about the academic success of our athletic teams here at The Citadel, and I would like to take a moment to congratulate all of our cadet-student-athletes, coaches and faculty members for the fall semester results in the classroom,” said Athletics Director Larry Leckonby. “We expect our cadet-student-athletes to perform well in the Corps, in the classroom and in athletic competition and we are very proud of the work that they have done so far in the 2008-09 school year.”
Women's rifle led all Bulldog teams with an impressive 3.86 grade point average. Men's tennis recorded the second highest GPA with 3.33, followed by women's cross country with 3.23, women's soccer with 3.12 and women's volleyball with 3.11.
Men's cross country and baseball posted team GPAs of 3.05, followed by football with a team average of 2.81.
Women's track and men's basketball both earned 2.79 GPAs, followed closely be women's golf at 2.78 and men's track at 2.76. Men's wrestling and men's rifle rounded out the 14 teams with a GPA of 2.7.
