KANSAS CITY, Mo. Bulldog head coach Ed Conroy was named the 2009 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District 22 Coach of the Year, announced Tuesday. The Division I All-District coaches of the year were selected by their peers.
Conroy is one of 24 coaches selected to the Division I All-District team, where he represents District 22. He was named the 2009 Southern Conference Coach of the Year by the media and the coaches after leading the Bulldogs to their most successful season.
The Bulldogs claimed the most conference victories in Bulldog Basketball history and won the most Division I games in school history. He led his team to the program's first-ever postseason appearance when they faced Old Dominion in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament last week.
The Citadel finished with a 15-5 mark in conference play and the No. 2 seed in the South Division for the Southern Conference Tournament. Their 15 conference wins earned them the program's first-ever second place finish in the conference. His team recorded a 20-13 record on the season, marking the program's second-ever 20-win season.
Going from one conference win last season to 15 this season, the Bulldogs had the largest one-year conference turnaround in program history and the largest one-year turnaround in Southern Conference history. With 20 victories this season, the Bulldogs have the largest one-year turnaround in program history, going from six wins last season.
Conroy is also one of 10 finalists for the Hugh Durham National Coach of the Year award and one of 12 finalists for the 2009 Skip Prosser Man of the Year award. He is also a possible candidate for National Coach of the Year.
