Chris McGuiness? Two Home Runs Powers The Citadel to 13-3 Win over Wofford

CHARLESTON, S.C. Chris McGuiness hit a pair of three-run home runs and Wes Wrenn pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts as The Citadel powered its way past Wofford Friday night, 13-3, in front of 975 at Riley Park.

The Bulldogs (16-10, 6-4 Southern) scored 13 runs on 14 hits and rolled after scoring four runs in the first and adding another eight in the seventh and eighth innings combined. Wofford (12-12, 3-6 SoCon) scored three runs two off a pair of home runs in the ninth as they recorded six hits in the game.

McGuiness went 3-for-3 with three runs and six RBI while Sonny Meade added a 2-for-4 performance as he collected his 300th career hit, becoming only the third player in school history and eighth player in Southern Conference history to achieve that feat.

Wes Wrenn (4-1) pitched a complete game in receiving the win, allowing only three runs on six hits and striking out eight. Wrenn did not allow a walk in his 9.0 innings on the mound and is the second Bulldog pitcher to throw a complete 9.0 inning game this season.

Scott Summers (3-2) was credited with the loss after allowing eight runs on nine hits in 6.2 innings on the mound while striking out five and walking three.

McGuiness' first home run of the day was a three-run shot over the left field fence in the first inning, putting the Bulldogs on top with a 4-1 advantage. McGuiness hit another three-run home run this time over the right field fence in the seventh inning, becoming the second player this season to hit two home runs in a game.

Prior to McGuiness' home run in the seventh, Nick Orvin scored on a wild pitch and Bryan Altman crossed the plate on an RBI single by Richard Jones. The Bulldogs took the 10-1 lead after scoring five runs in the seventh inning.

In the eighth, Meade doubled down the left field line with bases loaded as all three runners scored on the play. That double marked Meade's 300th career hit and gave the Bulldogs the 13-1 advantage.

In the top of the ninth, Wrenn allowed back-to-back home runs by Neil Robinnette and Michael Gilmartin with two outs before Mac Doyle grounded out to the mound to end the game.

The Citadel and Wofford will meet in the second game of the three-game series on Saturday, April 4 at 2 p.m. at Riley Park.
