The Citadel Places 12 on SoCon Winter Academic All-Conference Team

Charleston, S.C. A total of 12 cadet-student-athletes where named to the Southern Conference 2008-09 Winter Academic All-Conference team, announced Thursday by the SoCon. A total of 160 student-athletes, representing 12 Southern Conference institutions, were named to the team.

The academic team, which consists of men's and women's athletes who participated in basketball, wrestling and men's and women's indoor track and field, averaged a 3.54 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale. However, to be eligible one must possess at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average entering the winter season and must have competed in at least one-half of their team's competitions during the recently-concluded campaign.

The Citadel basketball's senior Jonathan Brick led the Bulldogs with a 3.95 GPA, while Chattanooga junior distance runner David Moore led the conference with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Also named to the team were track and field's Jamel Brown, Zach Johnson, Christopher Castagno, Nathan Jackson, Joseph Tkach, Preston Kight, James Sanyi, Emily Green, Erin Ritter, Lauren Fleming and wrestling's Aaron Brown.

This is the seventh year that the Southern Conference has named an Academic All-Conference team by season. Western Carolina placed a league-high 23 student-athletes on the list followed by Appalachian State's 21 and Chattanooga's 16. A total of 103 indoor track and field athletes were honored (45 men, 58 women), in addition to 39 from women's basketball.
