Final Weekend of Southern Conference Play to Determine Most Tournament Seedings

CHARLESTON, S.C. Entering the final weekend of regular season play, The Citadel could finish as high as second in the Southern Conference or drop to as low as fifth. One thing is already guaranteed The Citadel will be returning to the Southern Conference Tournament.

Entering the final weekend of play two teams have been eliminated UNC Greensboro and Samford and three seeds have been locked up: No. 1 Elon, No. 6 Appalachian State and No. 7 Davidson. Furman is close to locking up the eight seed as it would take Wofford to win two more games than Furman this weekend for the Terriers to sneak in to the tournament. Wofford is at Georgia Southern this weekend while Furman hosts UNC Greensboro.

The Citadel enters the weekend tied for third with the College of Charleston with the Bulldogs hosting the Cougars at Riley Park. Western Carolina is hot on the heels of the two Lowcountry teams and will play at Davidson this weekend.

The Citadel can finish anywhere from second to fifth in the Southern Conference this year with seeding scenarios listed below. Note: These scenarios have not been officially released by the Southern Conference.

In order to finish second, The Citadel must sweep the College of Charleston and Wofford must win at least two games over Georgia Southern. Another scenario in which The Citadel would finish second is one in which The Citadel wins two over the College of Charleston, Wofford sweeps Georgia Southern and Davidson wins at least one against Western Carolina.

For The Citadel to finish third, The Citadel must sweep the College of Charleston. Or, the Bulldogs must win two games over the College of Charleston and Davidson must win one over Western Carolina.

In order to finish fourth, the College of Charleston would need to win one this weekend while Western Carolina sweeps Davidson. Or, the College of Charleston would have to win two while Davidson wins two or three games over Western Carolina.

For The Citadel to finish fifth Charleston would have to win two games over the Bulldogs and Davidson would have to sweep Western Carolina or Charleston would have to sweep and WCU would have to win at least one.

The Bulldogs host the Cougars starting Thursday evening at 6 p.m. For complete coverage of Bulldog Baseball, please visit the official home of The Citadel Athletics at CitadelSports.com.
