Charleston, S.C. The Citadel wide receiver Andre Roberts tabbed his first preseason All-America honor by Consensus Draft Services, earning a first team selection on offense at wide receiver and first team defense at punt returner.
Having collected a number of accolades after a record-breaking season in 2008, the rising senior has become one of the most decorated players in Citadel football history. In 2008 national rankings, Roberts finished first in punt returns - earning the national title, second in receptions per games, second in total receiving yards, fourth in receiving yards per game, ninth in scoring and 14th in all-purpose running.
He also finished top in the Southern Conference in punt returns, receptions per games, total receptions, receiving yards per game, total receiving yards and all-purpose yards. In the process, he broke the school record in catches in a game, season and career, yards in a season, and punt return yards in a season and career.
As a result, Roberts earned first team All-America by the American Football Coaches Association and The Sports Network, while being named to the All-America second team by the Associated Press. He also earned first team honors at wide receiver and punt returner by both the SoCon media and coaches. He was also a finalist for the Walter Payton Award, given to the nation's top FCS player.
The All-American, from Columbia, S.C., recently was named the recipient of the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame Bobby Richardson Sportsmanship Award, to be presented on May 18, and a Bulldog team captain for the 2009 campaign.
