Six of 12 Nominees for the Charleston Baseball Hall of Fame Have Citadel Ties

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Six of the 12 nominees for induction into the Charleston Baseball Hall of Fame's Class of 2009 have ties to The Citadel.

Former players Lee Glaze '86, Donald Morillo '96 and Doug Pounder '71, along with former Director of Athletics Walt Nadzak, businessman Channing Proctor '91 and longtime Charleston mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr. '64 are among the nominees.

The readership of The Post and Courier selects the top four vote-getters through a series of ads in the paper and online.

A native of James Island, Glaze was the Southern Conference Athlete of the Year in 1986 and is a member The Citadel Athletic Hall of Fame.  Morillo, also of James Island, was the '95 SoCon Tournament MVP, a member of the '94 All-East Regional and '95 ABCA All-Atlantic Region teams and a NCBWA Honorable Mention All-American.  Pounder, also a member of The Citadel's Hall of Fame, is a local product who was one of the first recipients of full baseball grant-in-aid and was one of the top pitchers in school history.

Nadzak retired in 2000 after a 15-year stint as director of athletics and was instrumental in the creation of Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park and is credited with moving and ultimately making the Southern Conference Baseball Tournament a successful fixture in Charleston.  Proctor is the founder of the Charleston Chapter of The Miracle League while Riley, a Citadel graduate, continues to serve as one of the city's best promoters of baseball who spearheaded the creation of the baseball facility that bears his name.

Those already in the Charleston Baseball Hall of Fame with ties to The Citadel include Coach Chal Port, Anthony Jenkins '90, Richard Wieters '77 and the 1990 College World Series team.

The induction ceremony is set for Aug. 14 at Riley Park.
