CARY, N.C. The Citadel's Asher Wojciechowski, making his international debut, struck out eight batters in 5.2 innings while pitching for the United States national team as the Americans defeated Canada, 9-3, at the National Training Center in Cary. The win completed the five-game series sweep over Canada for the U.S.
Wojciechowski, who just completed his sophomore season at The Citadel, allowed two runs on three hits, walked two and fanned eight in 5.2 innings on the mound as he earned the win. Wojciechowski is the only Southern Conference student-athlete named to the 22-man Team USA roster for this summer's competition.
A Beaufort (S.C.) High School graduate, Wojciechowski recently finished a 2009 season for The Citadel where he went 3-3 with a 4.39 ERA. Wojciechowski capped the season off with a complete game, 15-strikeout performance against top-seeded Elon in the Southern Conference Tournament, becoming the first Bulldog pitcher to record 15 strikeouts in a game in over a decade.
