CARY, N.C. The Citadel's Asher Wojciechowski struck out two of the three Guatemalan batters he faced in a one inning relief performance Thursday at the National Training Complex in Cary. Wojciechowski was one of four American pitchers to combined for Team USA's first shutout of 2009 as the United States defeated Guatemala, 10-0.
Wojciechowski, a rising junior for The Citadel, has now struck out 10 batters in two appearances in international competition this summer for the United States National Team. Team USA (7-0) has a perfect record in 2009 and has won 31 consecutive games, dating back to last summer.
“Our pitchers have been doing an excellent job controlling the things that they are able to control,” said Eric Campbell, General Manager of the National Team. “Even during our trials period our pitchers were able to control some of our countries best hitters. I think they have all done a great job continuing to do so against our international opponents.”
In 2004, five pitchers on the National Trials Team combined to no-hit Team Canada at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park in Durham, N.C. Thursday night's win over Guatemala marked the first no-hitter in post-trials National Team (Collegiate) history.
The United States resumes its four-game series against Guatemala (0-2) on Friday, July 3 at 6:30 p.m. at the National Training Complex. For complete coverage of USA Baseball, please visit USAbaseball.com.
