The Citadel?s Harvey Schiller ?60 Elected To National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum Board of Directors

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. - At the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum's annual Board of Directors meeting on July 25, Dr. Harvey W. Schiller, a member of The Citadel Class of 1960, was elected to the Board, bringing the total number of directors to 19 for the non-profit educational institution. 

“With the election of Dr. Harvey Schiller, the Board has added a leader with great character and experience, whose passion for the game is reflected in his grand body of work,” said Jane Forbes Clark, Chairman of the Board of Directors.  “His energy, vision and diverse experiences will add new perspectives to our leadership team.”

Dr. Schiller is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the GlobalOptions Group, Inc., an international, publicly traded risk mitigation and management company based in New York, and also serves as President of the International Baseball Federation, the global governing body for the sport of baseball.  Previously, Dr. Schiller served as Chairman and C.E.O. of Yankees/Nets; President of Turner Sports, Inc.; Executive Director and Secretary General of the United States Olympic Committee and Commissioner of the Southeastern Conference.

Before joining the United States Olympic Committee, Dr. Schiller served for more than 25 years in the United States Air Force, achieving the rank of Brigadier General.  During his time with the Air Force, Dr. Schiller was a combat pilot during the Vietnam War and was the recipient of several military awards, including the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medals.

Dr. Schiller has been the recipient of many other awards and honors, including honorary doctorates from The Citadel and Northern Michigan University.  He also received the prestigious Olympic Order, the highest decorated honor presented to an individual by the International Olympic Committee for his work in the planning and awarding of the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games to the city of Atlanta.

Dr. Schiller holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Michigan, as well as Master's and Bachelor's degrees in Chemistry from Michigan.  He also earned a B.S. in Chemistry from The Citadel.

Enshrined in The Citadel Athletic Hall of Fame as an honorary member in 2001, Dr. Schiller and his wife, Marcia, have a home on Kiawah Island.

In addition to Board Chairman Jane Forbes Clark, whose grandfather, Stephen C. Clark, founded the Hall of Fame, the Hall of Fame's Board of Directors include: Vice Chairman Joe Morgan, along with five other Hall of Fame players including Phil Niekro, Robin Roberts, Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson and Tom Seaver.  Major League Baseball Commissioner Allan H. “Bud” Selig and MLB President and Chief Operating Officer Bob DuPuy, major league owners Bill DeWitt Jr. (St. Louis), David Glass (Kansas City), Jerry Reinsdorf (Chicago White Sox) and George Steinbrenner (New York Yankees), former American League President and Hall of Fame executive Lee MacPhail, former MLB President Paul Beeston, minor league owner Bill Gladstone (Tri-City Valley Cats), Kevin Moore, president of the Clark Estates, Inc., and former Hall of Fame Chairman Ed Stack round out the list of Directors.
