Wells Slides Into Second Place Among Citadel Scorers in Loss

Richmond, Va.- Cameron Wells scored a team-high 17 points and in the process moved into second place on The Citadel's all-time scoring list, however it was short of a Richmond squad that emerged with the 79-37 win. In the season opener for both teams, Wells moved past Art Musselman with 1,514 career points, and now trails only the all-time record held by Regan Truesdale. The host Spiders, who recognized their 2010 NCAA Tournament team prior to the contest, were led in double figures by Justin Harper's 18 points.

In their first road season opener since 2004, when they played Army, the Bulldogs converted 14-of-57 (24.6%) from the field. Wells made 7-of-16 field goal attempts, while Urbanus was the only other Cadet with multiple field goals (2-10) in the contest. Urbanus moves within 10 points of becoming the 28th Bulldog to reach the 1,000 point plateau. The Citadel finished with 35 rebounds, 13 on the offensive glass, behind six apiece from Morakinyo Williams and Bryan Streeter.

Richmond shot better than 50 percent in all three phases of the game. The Spiders finished 31-of-54 (57.4%) from field goal range, 11-of-20 (55%) from the 3-point line and 6-of-12 (50%) at the free throw line. The trio of Harper (18 points), Cedrick Lindsay (10 points) and Josh Duinker (10 points) led 10 players in scoring. Harper, who finished a perfect 4-of-4 from 3-point range, was one of eight players to finish with a 3-pointer. Senior center Dan Geriot anchored the middle with eight rebounds to go along with his seven points. Combined with teammates Darius Garrett (seven rebounds) and Harper (five rebounds) the Spiders hauled in 33 defensive boards.

"I give Richmond a lot of credit, they have a good basketball team with some very nice players," said Head Coach Chuck Driesell after the game. "They're going to have a really good year, but we didn't come out and play the way that we know we are capable of playing on the offensive end. We will go into practice tomorrow and improve ourselves, both offensively and defensively, and come out better prepared for Charleston Southern on Tuesday night."

With a 26-point advantage at the break, Richmond went on an 8-2 run over the first 3:02 of the second half to force an early Citadel timeout. Wells responded with a quick jumper out of the break, scoring nine of the Bulldogs next 11 points, to make the score 61-29. The combination of Williams, Streeter, Cosmo Morabbi and the first points in the career of DeVontae Wright made for the final eight Bulldog points over the remaining 11:29 of the contest.

The Spiders took advantage of a 7-for-10 shooting performance from beyond the arc to take a 42-16 lead into the half. Richmond jumped out to an early 18-4 lead behind 3-pointers from Geriot, Anderson and Harper. Baskets by Dejworek, Wells and Urbanus, who connected on the first Citadel 3-pointer of the game, kept the Dogs within striking distance at 25-11 at the 8:19 mark.

Richmond responded with a 13-0 run, highlighted by treys from Greg Robbins, Lindsay and Darien Brothers, pushing the lead to 38-11. Urbanus ended the drought, which spanned 5:13 of the first half, with a pair of free throws. Just under one minute later he converted his second 3-pointer, accounting for the final Bulldog points of the frame.

Harper converted 4-of-5 field goals, including 2-for-2 from 3-point range, to lead all scorers with 10 points. Teammate Josh Duinker finished the first half with eight points and was one of four Spiders to hit multiple field goals.

Urbanus led the Cadets with eight points, behind 2-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs also got offensive production from Wells (six points) and Dejworek (two points).

The Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday night when they travel to Charleston Southern for a 7:30 p.m. meeting with the Buccaneers. The Citadel will host 14 games at McAlister Field House, including nine against Southern Conference competition, beginning with a pair of November games against James Madison (Nov. 20) and High Point (Nov. 23).
