Charleston, S.C.- The Citadel Basketball team returns to action on Tuesday evening when they square off against intracity foe Charleston Southern at 7:30 p.m. at CSU Field House. It marks the 19th meeting between the two schools, in a rivalry that dates back to the 1992 season. The Buccaneers snapped a two-game losing streak in the series last season with a 61-60 victory at McAlister Field House, giving themselves a two-game cushion in the all-time series (10-8).
"We have had two really solid days of practice and I am very encouraged by the way that our players responded following the loss to Richmond," said head coach Chuck Driesell. "It will be a great road test for us early on and the atmosphere will simulate that of a Southern Conference game. With the way that last year's game came down to the final possession, I know that our players are looking to avenge the loss at McAlister Field House. I am sure that The Citadel faithful will be out in full force to show their support in this rivalry."
SHARPSHOOTING EXPERT: Zach Urbanus, who knocked down the only two 3-pointers in The Citadel lineup against Richmond, is now within 10 points of becoming the 28th player in school history to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau. Urbanus, a key threat in Driesell's high-octane offense enters the game with intracity rival Charleston Southern with 990 career points. Following a 2009-10 season in which he drained 83 three-pointers, Urbanus became the only player in Citadel basketball history to convert 70-plus 3-pointers in each year of their career.
HISTORY WATCH: Austin Dahn will be looked upon to make an impact beyond the perimeter this season. Dahn, behind his 182 career 3-pointers, ranks seventh on the all-time list. Dahn and Zach Urbanus, with 808 and 990 career points to their credit respectively, can join Demetrius Nelson and Cameron Wells as the 15th set of teammates with 1,000 career points to play alongside each other. Further, they would become the second quartet of teammates in Bulldog history with 1,000 points to take to the court since 2002 when Travis Cantrell, Alan Puckett, Cliff Washburn and Michael Joseph accomplished the feat.
NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE OPPONENT LOCKERROOM: In May, Citadel assistant coach J.D. Powell joined Driesell's staff after six seasons as an assistant at Charleston Southern. Powell was a key part of Jim Platt's 2004-05 staff that defeated Liberty and High Point and advanced to the Big South Conference championship game. Instrumental in player development, Powell mentored Big South Freshman of the Year recipients Omar Carter (07-08) and Jimmy Sexton (08-09) during his tenure.
His work with player development, recruiting, scouting and academic success of Charleston Southern student-athletes garnered Giedrius Knysas Academic All-America honors in 2008-09.
PALMETTO RIVALRY: Charleston Southern is one of 30 in-state teams that the Bulldogs have squared off with over their 100 seasons of basketball. The Citadel will look to improve on its 391-418 all-time mark against Palmetto state teams, holding a winning record against 14 of different opponents. SECOND IN SCORING: Following his 17-point outing against Richmond, senior guard Cameron Wells moved into second place on the all-time scoring list. Coincidentally, he also moved within 147 points of The Citadel's all-time scoring record held by Regan Truesdale. It took Wells 96 games to move past Art Musselman's scoring mark (1,506 points). While it took one more game to surpass Musselman, Wells achieved the feat in less field goals. Musselman, who played from 1956-1960, hit 587 field goals over the duration of his career in a Bulldog uniform. Wells, who has made 563 career field goals, used the advent of the 3-point line to account for the differences in total field goals. Successful on 70-of-239 3-pointers, it has taken him 24 less field goal attempts to reach Musselman's mark. The following is a career breakdown of Wells and Musselman.

PREVIEWING CHARLESTON SOUTHERN (0-1 Overall)
GEORGIA TECH STINGS CSU (Nov. 12): A strong performance from newcomer Johathan Brooks wasn't enough to power the CSU men's basketball team's offense as the Bucs fell short in the 2010-11 season opener, falling to Georgia Tech 52-39 at the Alexander Coliseum in Atlanta.
Brooks notched a double-double in his CSU debut, putting up 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead the way for the Bucs. Senior Jamarco Warren added in eight points and seven boards, while newcomer Sheldon Strickland came up with seven points in his first collegiate effort. The Bucs shot 26.9 percent from the field, and made just 4-of-24 three pointers.
Mfon Udofia was one of three Georgia Tech players to finish in double figures, putting up 12 points, with teammate Brian Oliver and Iman Shumpert adding in 11 each. A strong defensive effort from the Buccaneers limited the Yellow Jackets to 28.8 percent from the field and 13.6 percent from downtown.
CORE GROUP OF RETURNEES: The Bucs are looking forward to attacking the season with eight returning players, including four starters. CSU also welcomes back a more experienced group, with the core returners consisting of senior Jamarco Warren (Big South All-Conference First-Team), junior Kelvin Martin, junior Jo'el Lamb, redshirt sophomore Kenny Mitchell and sophomore Jeremy Sexton (Big South Freshman of the Year). After a four game improvement in overall and conference wins during the 2009-10 season, the Bucs show no signs of slowing down in 2010-11.
LOOKING TO AVENGE LAST SEASON'S LOSS: Cameron Wells led The Citadel with 23 points, however it was not enough to deter a Charleston Southern victory at McAlister Field House as the Buccaneers escaped with a 61-60 victory. Wells converted 10-of-16 shots in the contest, including one three pointer, in 32 minutes of action.
Trailing by one point with the possession, CSU's Jamarco Warren drove to the hoop for the game-winner with 1.2 seconds remaining. Warren, who finished with 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting, forced the Bulldogs to immediately call a timeout for the final possession. After a deep pass down the court, and subsequent foul, the game ended in favor of the Buccaneers. Warren (13 points) shared the stage with teammate Kelvin Martin who notched 15 points, while pulling down 10 boards, on 6-for-10 shooting from the field.
Fellow Bulldogs guard Zach Urbanus led the team with three 3-pointers in the game, scoring 12 points and forcing two steals on the defensive end. Joe Wolfinger manned the middle with 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds, including three offensive. Ed Conroy's unit was sparked by Cosmo Morabbi's nine points off the bench, including a pair of critical 3-pointers during a two minute span that gave The Citadel a 58-55 lead with 4:09 remaining. The Citadel falls to 1-1 with the loss, while Charleston Southern earns their first win of the season.
