Citadel Basketball Heads to Coastal Carolina

Charleston, S.C- The Citadel Basketball team is seeking its second straight win under the direction of Head Coach Chuck Driesell, when it returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 27 at Coastal Carolina. The ninth meeting between the two schools, in a series that is deadlocked at 4-4, is slated to start at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs, who emerged victorious in the last meeting that took place on Dec. 29, 2001, are looking to hand Chanticleers Head Coach Cliff Ellis his first loss against the school a series of nine games that span back to his collegiate playing days at Florida State.

"Tomorrow's game at coastal Carolina is going to be yet another very tough test for our ball club," said Driesell. "Our guys will have to play great team defense if we are going to come out with the win. Cameron Wells played a great game against High Point and we got much better production from our big men. I am excited to see if we can build on that success as we are going up against a talented team on their home court. I have been extremely happy with our intensity on defense, but we must learn to play that way with fewer fouls. We can't afford to allow our opponents to get to the free throw line 30-plus times."

DRIESELL, BULLDOGS DOWN HIGH POINT, 71-63 (Nov. 23): Cameron Wells netted a game-high 25 points to lead The Citadel past High Point, 71-63, and helped Chuck Driesell grab his first NCAA Division I coaching victory in front of 1,224 in attendance at McAlister Field House. The senior point guard topped the 20-point mark for the 29th time in his career and in the process moved within 86 points of becoming the all-time scoring leader.

Wells teamed with Zach Urbanus (10 points), Matt Clark (9 points) and eight points apiece from Bryan Streeter and Morakinyo Williams to move the Bulldogs to 1-3 on the season. A dominant performance by The Citadel front court, which finished with a 45-34 advantage in rebounding, was integral in the victory. The Bulldogs totaled 16 offensive and 29 defensive rebounds in the game, due in large part to six offensive rebounds by Streeter. Urbanus, who tied a career-high with eight rebounds, edged out Streeter, Wells and Williams who tallied seven apiece.  Urbanus also established a new career-high in assists, eight, bettering a previous high of seven that came against Wofford on Jan. 19, 2008. The Bulldogs capitalized on a 23-of-58 (39.7%) field goal percentage and knocked down 5-of-16 (31.3%) from beyond the arc.

Nick Barbour, the only HPU player in double figures, converted 7-of-11 field goal attempts and 5-of-6 free throw attempts to score 20 points in the loss. Teammates Shay Shine (9 points) and Corey Law (8 points) narrowly missed double-digit scoring performances. Du'Vaughn Maxwell anchored the middle for High Point with eight rebounds, allowing the Panthers to outscore The Citadel 36-24 in the paint.

URBANUS RECEIVES RECOGNITION FOR HIS RANGE:  Senior guard Zach Urbanus was recognized by Foxsports.com's Senior Basketball Writer, Jeff Goodman, as the seventh best shooter in the country on Nov. 21, 2010. Urbanus, who Goodman ranked as the 37th best 3-point shooter last season, has converted the most 3-point shots in school history (237). He is the only player in Citadel basketball history to convert 70-plus 3-pointers in each year of their career. The sharpshooter from Austin, Texas has hit five or more 3-pointers on 12 different occasions during his career as a Bulldog. "Last season was the worst percentage-wise over his three-year career, and he still made 41 percent (83-of-202) of his treys," Goodman said of Urbanus. "Urbanus has made 43 percent of his 3s while at The Citadel." Other players from the Southern Conference recognized by Goodman were Donald Sims (6th, Appalachian State); Andrew Goudelock (10th, College of Charleston).

MOVIN' ON UP: Swingman Austin Dahn, who leads the team with eight treys this season, has moved within three 3-pointers of taking over sole possession of fourth place among the school's premiere 3-point shooters. Dahn, with 190 long range buckets to his credit, has his sights set on passing the numbers established by 1990 graduate Ryan Nesbit (191) and 2002 standout Alan Puckett (192). Since the NCAA adopted the 3-point line in 1986, six players including Dahn and teammate Zach Urbanus have converted 190-plus 3-point attempts for The Citadel. Dahn began his collegiate career with a team-high 79 3-pointers in the 2007-08 season, followed by 52 (2008-09) and 51 (2009-10). In comparison, Puckett's season-high from beyond the arc came in 1999-00 when he hit 63-of-86 (73.3%). Nesbit was the second Bulldog in school history to hit 70-plus in a single season, hitting 73-of-179 3-pointers during the 1989-90 season. Craig Bardo became the first Citadel shooter to top 70 3-pointers in a season, netting 77-of-200 3-point attempts during the 1986-87 campaign.

PERFECT MARK: Coastal Carolina Head Coach Cliff Ellis is a perfect 9-0 in his career against The Citadel. Ellis, who graduated from Florida State in 1968, squared off against the Cadets on three different occasions during his playing days with the Seminoles. Later, while at the helm at Clemson, Ellis' Tigers won a string of six straight games against the Bulldogs from 1998 to 1994. In the nine meetings against The Citadel, each game has been decided by a double digit margin.

PREVIEWING COASTAL CAROLINA (5-2 Overall)

COASTAL NOTCHES THIRD STRAIGHT WIN (Nov. 23): The Coastal Carolina men's basketball team ran its winning streak to three games following its 96-56 win over North Carolina Wesleyan Tuesday night from Kimbel Arena.

Coastal sophomore guard Kierre Greenwood led all scorers with 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting and finished with a career-high three 3-pointers to go along with a game-high five assists.  Junior guard Desmond Holloway added 16 points and four steals and has scored at least 13 points in all seven games for Coastal.

Anthony Raffa poured in 11 points and dished out four assists, while sophomore guard Danny Nieman added 11 points and three steals.

Sam McLaurin and Holloway each pulled down six rebounds to help the Chanticleers hold a 42-21 edge on the glass.

Matt Dougherty hit four three-pointers and led the North Carolina Wesleyan with 16 points.  Alex Murray finished with 11 points and three blocked shots, while Cornelius Snow also scored in double figures with 10 points.

Coastal Carolina (5-2) used its full court pressure defense to force North Carolina Wesleyan into seven turnovers over the first nine minutes of the game and limited the Battling Bishops to just one field goal during that span to open a 20-3 lead. Greenwood scored eight points and hit three-pointers on back-to-back possessions during the run.

Dougherty hit a three-pointer with just under five minutes to play in the first half to pull the Battling Bishops to within eight points at 29-21, but Coastal closed to half on an 8-3 run to lead 37-24 at halftime.

The Chants went on to lead by as many as 40 points in the second half and held North Carolina Wesleyan without a field goal for the final 5:16 of the game.

North Carolina Wesleyan committed 14 turnovers in the second half and 25 in the game and watched the Chanticleers turn those mistakes into 36 points.

THE DRIESELL-ELLIS RIVALRY: Cliff Ellis was named head basketball coach at Clemson prior to the start of the 1984 season, replacing Bill Foster. Ellis, who went on to capture ACC Coach of the Year honors in 1987 and 1990, led the Tigers to three NCAA Tournament appearances during his 10-year career. He also went head-to-head with 'Lefty' Driesell, father of Citadel Head Coach Chuck Driesell, on four different occasions during the 1984-85 and 1985-86 seasons. The two split the head-to-head meetings (2-2) with a pair of victories on their home court.
