Spartanburg, S.C. -A total of 33 cadet-student-athletes were named to the Southern Conference 2010 Fall Academic All-Conference team, announced Monday by the Southern Conference. Across the board 345 student-athletes, representing 12 Southern Conference institutions, were named to the team.
The academic team, which consists of athletes who participated in football, volleyball, men's and women's soccer and men's and women's cross country recorded a 3.56 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
The Citadel was paced by junior Shanna Couch, a midfielder on the soccer team, who finished with a 4.0 GPA. Other representatives included Ryan Keiper (Football, 3.96), Jessica Maas and Amanda Beal (Volleyball, 3.75) and Micah Weissinger (Cross Country, 3.72).
Among institutions, Elon had the highest number of academic all-conference team members with 42. Appalachian State (36), Chattanooga (35), The Citadel (33) and Wofford (31) also had at least 30 student-athletes honored as well.
The women's soccer programs supplied the greatest number of honorees with 85, followed by football and women's cross country which each had 65 players qualify.
