Charleston, S.C. - The national football attendance was released Monday, Feb. 22 by the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA), with the Bulldogs ranking in 18th place among the top 30 of the 2009 NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) attendance team leaders.
Averaging 13,029 fans in five games at Johnson Hagood Stadium, the Bulldogs jumped up one spot from last season's attendance average of 12,261 in six home games. The Citadel joined three other league opponents on the leader board. Appalachian State dropped from last season to a second place rank averaging 24,004, while Georgia Southern recorded an average of 16,728 in eighth place and Furman averaged 10,973 to move up to 26th place. Montana claimed the number one position averaging 24,417. Yale, Delaware and Old Dominion rounded out the top five.
The Southern Conference once again registered a second place ranking in the 2009 NCAA Division I FCS conference attendance averaging 12,024 fans from nine teams and 48 games played. The SoCon fell just shy of first place to the Southwestern Athletic Conference with an attendance record of 12,258 from 10 teams in 53 games played.
