Irvine, Calif. - The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association announced a list of forty-five players on Thursday named to the midseason watch list for the sixth annual Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in Division I.
The Citadel closer Drew Mahaffey (Summerville, S.C.) was named to the elite list. He is one of only two pitchers on the list from a school in South Carolina, the other being Coastal Carolina's Austin Fleet. He is also one of only two pitchers from the Southern Conference to make the list. Appalachian State's Chris Patterson was the other SoCon pitcher listed.
Mahaffey has six saves on the season to go along with a 2-2 record and an ERA of 4.58. The junior is second on the team with 19 appearances and has 19 strikeouts in 19.2 innings of relief. The left-hander has 13 career saves, which ranks eighth all-time in Citadel history. His six saves this season rank fourth in the Southern Conference.
The Bulldogs return to action on Friday as they return to Southern Conference play against Furman at 6 p.m. For more information on The Citadel baseball team, visit CitadelSports.com.
