Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel head football coach Kevin Higgins announced the 2010-11 team captains on Friday. Voted on by their teammates, the four selected team leaders are junior Tolu Akindele and fifth-year senior Cortez Allen on defense and fifth-year seniors Ryan Keiper and Alex Sellars on offense.
The lone junior, Akindele finished 2009 fourth among the Bulldog defense with 55 overall tackles. The Houston, Texas native completed his sophomore campaign with three and a half tackles for a loss of five yards after starting in all eleven games. Akindele's best performance came against Samford where he led the defense with a career game-high nine total tackles, four unassisted, and one tackle for a loss of two yards.
Also a starter for the 2009 season, Allen led the secondary with 112 yards from three interceptions. He captured his lone touchdown with his second pick of the game against Samford, a long of 82 yards. Allen finished the season registering five breakups, eight passes defended and a recovered fumble. The defensive back from Ocala, Fla. finished second among the defense with 57 total tackles, 36 solo, including a game-high 13 tackles at Chattanooga. For his on the field efforts, Allen was selected as a member of the 2009 SoCon Media All-Conference second team.
Ryan Keiper, enters his senior campaign in his second season at fullback after making the switch in 2009 from linebacker. Hailing from Allentown, Pa., Keiper concluded the 2009 season with two carries for two yards as well as three catches for 27 yards. Majoring in engineering, Keiper holds a 3.98 cumulative GPA for his coursework, and was named a national finalist for a Fulbright research grant in Tanzania.
Selected to the 2009 SoCon Media All-Conference first team as well as the 2009 All-SoCon Coaches second team, tight end Sellars returns as one of the Bulldogs' offensive threats. The Greenwood, S.C. native finished fourth among the receiving corp with 159 yards from 16 catches and second on the team in touchdowns with six. His highlighting performance came last season against Presbyterian when he caught three passes for 35 yards and two touchdowns.
