Clawson to be Inducted into Henderson State Hall of Honor

Arkadelphia, Ark. - The Henderson State University Athletic Department in conjunction with the H Club announced its inductees for the Class of 2010 Hall of Honor. Among the 14th class of inductees includes current Citadel Director of Sports Medicine Andy Clawson.

Andy Clawson came to Henderson State in 1965 and while working on his degree he served as an athletic trainer for the Reddie football and basketball teams.

A native of El Dorado, Ark., Clawson received his BSE degree from Henderson State in 1969 and earned his master's degree, also from Henderson State, in 1970. He was recognized by Henderson in 2002 with the Distinguished Alumnus Award.

"It was a very informative time with some very good people," said Clawson. "Coach Wells was a tremendous influence on me there. You get so many experiences early on and I am very excited and very proud that they would think enough of me."

After leaving Henderson State in 1970, Clawson spent three years as an Assistant Athletic Trainer at Clemson University and became The Citadel's Head Athletic Trainer in 1973.

The institution's first Director of Sports Medicine, Clawson has been responsible for the prevention and rehabilitation of athletic-related injuries and illnesses for the Citadel cadet-student-athletes in addition to the members of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets.

In 1998 he was the recipient of the Fred Hoover Award, the highest sports medicine-related honor given in the state of South Carolina. The Citadel also recognized him with the Outstanding Service Award in 1992.

Clawson has been active in many professional organizations, especially the NATA, where he twice served as vice president, served on two occasions as a member of its Board of Directors, and twice acting as the District III Director. Since 1990, he has served on NATA's Board of Certification. Within South Carolina, he has been on the S.C. Advisory Committee for Athletic Trainers since 1984, and continues to serve as the state chairman. Clawson also holds membership in the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, and The McCue Society, among others.

Clawson has also served as Athletic Trainer for the 1976 USA Basketball Team Olympic Trials in Raleigh, N.C., and also volunteered his services for the 1996 Special Olympic World Games, also in Raleigh.  In 2003, Clawson and his staff won the Athletic Training Staff of the Year award from the South Carolina's Athletic Trainer's Association.

"Those are the people that I grew up with. To be gone as long as I have, it is a tremendous honor. I am very pleased and very excited. To go in with Mike Peterson, one of my players when I was there is also pretty special."

The 2010 Hall of Honor Ceremony will take place on Saturday, October 2 at the HSU Garrison Center Banquet Room beginning at 11 a.m.

Following the induction ceremonies, the seven members will be recognized prior to Henderson State's football game with Arkansas-Monticello at Carpenter-Haygood Stadium.
