Charleston, S.C.- The Citadel head football coach Kevin Higgins, in conjunction with The Citadel Football Association, hosted the inaugural Lady Bulldogs: Football 101 on Saturday. It drew over 50 female participants to campus for an experience inside the life of a Citadel football player.
Football 101 gave the women an opportunity to meet The Citadel football coaching staff, learn fun facts about the program, while participating in offensive and defensive drills. Participants also took to the field at Johnson Hagood Stadium for a series of plays and agility drills.
"We are trying to give more women in the Charleston area an opportunity to see what our football program is about," Coach Higgins said of the experience. "We have so many loyal male Citadel fans out there, however we feel that if their spouses, friends, daughters or sisters have a chance to learn more on the game and specifically our program it will intensify the interest from the overall community."
Following event check-in Coach Higgins, John Carlisle (CFA) and Jerry Baker (Brigadier Foundation) welcomed participants to the seminar. The ladies were divided into a blue and white team before a two-hour long tour of Seignious Hall ensued. The tour included a visit to the Weight Room, Training Room, Locker Room and football Team Room for offensive and defensive basics.
After the short drive to Johnson Hagood Stadium, and a group shot, the ladies were treated to lunch. At that point they were able to hear from Kaye Higgins about the life as a coach's spouse. The women were also treated to a uniform modeling by equipment manager Kevin Yeager and select Bulldog players.
Football 101 then moved to Sansom Field where the women took place in a warm-up, agility drills and a head-to-head scrimmage. The seminar concluded in the Altman Athletic Center dressing room. All those involved received tickets to the game against Presbyterian and a Citadel football t-shirt to commemorate the event.
Among the participants were Kandie Norred and her daughter Mac Norred. "I am impressed with the facilities, training program and advantages that The Citadel makes for its players," said Kandie. "It gives me a greater respect for Coach Higgins. Now that I get to see the behind the scenes, and their preparation, I have a better appreciation for the glory days on Saturday afternoon." As for Mac, who assisted in film breakdown with Coach Josh Conklin, she found that "being a football player is a lot harder than I thought."
