Charleston, S.C. -The Citadel's men's and women's rifle and women's outdoor track and field teams have been honorably bestowed with the NCAA 2010-11 Public Recognition Award for achieving a NCAA Division I Academic Progress (APR).
This Public Recognition award is only given to the top 10 percent of all squads within their respective sports and is a part of the NCAA Division I academic reform effort. The APR provides a real time semester snap shot of how a team progresses academically and calculates the score based on sport-culture specific factors which include: eligibility, retention and graduation rates.
The NCAA has highlighted how imperative the roles of these coaches are in helping student-athletes in achieving their goals, not only athletically but also academically.
"We are very proud of the hard work shown by our cadet-student-athletes and their coaches," said Director of Athletics Larry W. Leckonby. "Everything that we do here at The Citadel is a team effort and these types of accomplishments would not be possible if it was not for full cooperation from our athletes, coaches, faculty, administration and support staff. This recognition shows the level of commitment to excellence The Citadel coaches and athletes have, not only in athletics but also in the classroom."
