The Citadel Head Coach Kevin Higgins on the game…
"We saw what they were able to do against Clemson and we knew that in order to stay in the game we were going to have to do everything correctly up front and I know that offensively we didn't do that. They whipped us inside and their interior five guys took a lot away from us. They had a good understanding of football and did a good job executing."
"They are a triple option team and we are trying to get where they are in terms of executing and playing football, so hopefully our guys, especially the young ones, had a chance to see that and we can look like that at some point."
"Aaron Miller had a lot of pressure inside and he didn't play as well as he'd hope. Our interior guys did not play well and they were able to take away the run."
"There's no question that the punt return really hurt us from a momentum standpoint. They haven't been able to do much on special teams this year, but we missed a few tackles and if you're going to win a game like this your special team needs to do better than that."
"They run a lot of different packages and have been running this offense for a long time. They know when you line up in a certain way and they make their adjustments well. When you play an option team like that you're not going to surprise them."
Wofford Head Coach Mike Ayers
Coach Ayers' comments on the game…
"We worked really hard this week and I thought The Citadel was a dangerous football team. Anytime you can come back from 27 points down to win a football game, you are dangerous. We knew going in that they would pose problems. We knew they could exploit the defense and has a sound kicking game. We thought field position would be a factor, but in the first half we were money. We stayed away from penalties and executed. We did a great job upfront. I don't know how many negative plays we put them in, but we put them in a large amount. Bottom line is if you are going to stop the triple option we have to put teams in negative plays. We have to get them behind in the stick count. Hats off to the coaches, I thought they did a great job in their preparation and hats off to the players. They could have easily come down here with the mindset it was going to be an easy one, but they were all business."
Coach Ayers' comments on the halftime lead…
"I was not comfortable with the lead. I told them that score looks familiar. A week ago they came back and took a really good football team and beat them in the second half. What we need to do is not give them any hope and make sure that we do our job to make sure we don't allow them to get any momentum."
Coach Ayers' comments on getting players in the game…
"It is always great when you get the other guys in there. Frankly, it has been tough to have a game that you feel comfortable with to get guys in and allow them show their stuff. We had some good things happen with that group and there are also some areas of concern. Overall I was pleased and I know that our kids are excited about getting a win."
Coach Ayers' comments on quarterback Brian Kass…
"I hope this game helps his confidence and we have more opportunities to put him in games. The toughest thing about being a number two is when you don't get enough reps in live play. He did some good things for the run game."
Coach Ayers' comments on setting the model for the triple option…
"I am not sure The Citadel is going for what we do. We have been running it for a long time, but a lot of credit for The Citadel for as good as they are running it. They have some talented players. Their offensive line came off the ball well and I was very impressed with their center. They also blocked the perimeter extremely well. We knew going in it was going to be a tough fight. We just kept our mind focused on the prize and get out of here with a win. I told the guys, I don't care what the score is, as long as we have one more than they do."
Coach Ayers' comments on Brenton Bersin…
"He is a phenomenal athlete and has a lot of talent. He is a guy when every time he touches the ball he has to ability to make you wish he didn't have the ball in his hands."
Coach Ayers' comments on walk-on Alex Dunmire…
"Anytime you have a guy that walks onto your program and he can contribute is huge. Players that come on as walk-on have to earn an opportunity and Alex. He works hard and it is great to see him have an opportunity to get in there."
