Charleston, S.C. – Seven former Bulldogs began their 2011 seasons over the weekend as minor league baseball opened the season across the country. Of the seven former Citadel players, one has been assigned to AAA, one to AA, three to advanced-A, one to class-A and one to extended spring training.
Dallas McPherson (Randleman, N.C.) headlines the list for The Citadel. The 57th overall pick of the 2001 draft has been assigned close to home this year with the Charlotte Knights, the AAA affiliate of Chicago White Sox. McPherson batted .400 (4-for-10) with a pair of doubles in the first three games of the season for the Knights.
Picking up where he left off last season, Chris Swauger (Tampa, Fla.) returns to the Springfield Cardinals, the AA affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. The 26th round draft pick by St. Louis is hitting .429 with a pair of RBI early in the season. Swauger combined to hit .280 with 17 doubles and 48 RBI in 86 games between Springfield and Palm Beach last season.
Fresh off his SoCon Pitcher of the Year Award and All-America campaign in 2010, Asher Wojciechowski (Sturgis, Mich.) has been rewarded this season by being placed with the Dunedin Blue Jays, the Class-A Advanced affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. The 41st overall draft pick of the 2010 draft by Toronto and highest draft pick in Citadel history, "Wojo" hurled 5.0 scoreless innings in his first start of the season on Sunday. Chris McGuiness (Charleston, S.C.) was traded from Boston to Texas during the 2010 season and he will begin his 2011 campaign with the new Class-A Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. The 13th round selection of the Boston Red Sox in the 2009 draft hit .298 with 12 homers and 46 RBI in 78 games with the Greenville Drive last season before he was traded. McGuiness has a pair of RBI and scored a pair of runs for the Pelicans in the opening weekend of the 2011 campgain.
After starting 23 games for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in 2010, Matt Crim (Summerville, S.C.) returns to the Class-A Advanced affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. This season however, that will reside with Lynchburg Hillcats after the Braves switched affiliations. The 21st round selection in the 2009 draft by Atlanta hurled 0.2 scoreless innings of relief over the weekend.
Richard Jones (Sumter, S.C.) makes his way to the Peoria Chiefs, the Class-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs to start the 2011 season. In four games played this season, Jones has already belted two homers and picked up four RBI.
Bryan Altman (Summerville, S.C.) remains in extended spring training for the San Diego Padres. Altman was assigned to the Arizona League after being drafted in the 41st round by San Diego in last year's draft.
Starting off in independent ball this season, Wes Wrenn (High Point, N.C.) will begin play with the Gary Southshore Railcats in May. The 35th round selection of the 2009 MLB Draft by the New York Mets went 6-5 with an ERA of 3.36 in 22 games played between St. Lucie and Brooklyn in 2010.
