Charleston, S.C. – Senior left-handed pitcher Drew Mahaffey will undergo season-ending surgery next month after he injured his knee on April 10 against College of Charleston.
The injury occurred when Mahaffey (Summerville, S.C.) struck out the Cougars' Matt Leeds in the fifth inning of Sunday's game last weekend. The senior slipped and fell off the mound while throwing the pitch and did not return to the game.
Mahaffey finishes sixth all-time at The Citadel with 19 career saves and is 10th on the all-time career list with 84 appearances.
"It's a sad ending to a very good career," said Bulldogs Head Coach Fred Jordan on Monday. "We need to focus on the bring spots of his career. To be able to finish where he did in saves and appearances with a program rich in tradition says a lot about the kind of player he is."
The Citadel continues their road trip in midweek as they visit Charleston Southern on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Buccaneer Ballpark. Live stats will be available and a recap and box score will follow the action on all new CitadelSports.com.
