Four Bulldog Grapplers Compete at ASICS University Nationals

Akron, Ohio – Four Citadel wrestlers competed at the 2011 ASICS University Nationals at the University of Akron over the weekend.

Reigning Southern Conference Wrestler of the Year Turtogtokh Luvsandorj (Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia) led The Citadel at this year's event with a second place finish. Redshirt sophomore Odie Delaney (Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.) made it to the quarterfinals of the heavyweight division while a pair of Bulldog freshmen also competed in Kenneth Radford (Fayetteville, N.C.) and Joaquin Marquez (Las Cruces, N.M.).

Finishing runner-up at 174 pounds, Luvandorj defeated NCAA qualifier Cody Yohn of Minnesota in the quarterfinals, 2-0, 7-0. In the semifinals, the sophomore would avenge a dual loss he suffered in January at the Lone Star Duals to Oklahoma's Tyler Caldwell by downing the Sooner, 2-0, 5-0. Caldwell reached All-America status and finished runner-up in the 2011 NCAA Championships in Philadelphia. The Bulldog eventually fell in the finals to Ohio State's Colt Sponseller, 4-0, 1-1. Sponseller finished fourth at the NCAA Championships last month.

Delaney reached the quarterfinals of the heavyweight bracket after stunning Minnesota's Tony Nelson when he pinned the Golden Golpher at the 1:30 mark. Nelson finished seventh at heavyweight in the NCAA Championships in March. The Bulldog narrowly fell to Ohio's Jeremy Johnson in the quarterfinals, by a 1-0, 1-1 decision. In the consolation bracket, Delaney was eliminated by Michigan States' Mike McClure, 1-0, 2-0.

Radford (Fayetteville, N.C.) at 174 pounds and Joaquin Marquez at 132.25 pounds (Las Cruces, N.M.) also participated in the event over the weekend. The freshmen faced solid competition but were eliminated early in the double-elimination tournament.
