Simpson Departs The Citadel After 10 Years

Charleston, S.C. – After 10 years, nine at the helm of the Bulldog Tennis Program, Toby Simpson will not return as The Citadel's head coach for the 2011-12 season, announced Wednesday by Director of Athletics Larry W. Leckonby.

Simpson's tenure ends with a .368 winning percentage after his teams earned an overall record of 77-132 and 26-60 in the Southern Conference (.302).  During that time, Simpson saw John Williams earn the SoCon's Buddy Hartsell Sportsmanship Award in 2004 and Danny Dossetor earn 2005 SoCon Freshman of the Year, while coaching eight first team All-Conference selections and five second team selections.

Simpson coached teams that won ITA All-Academic Team awards in 2003, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. He also coached 16 ITA Scholar-Athletes, two ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District and one ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America recipients, a 2007 Coleman Lew Leadership Award recipient  and a TIAA-CREF Academic All-Conference selection.

"We appreciate what Toby has done for the men's tennis program at The Citadel," said Leckonby. "He has dedicated 10 years of his life to tennis here at The Citadel and in the Charleston community. We wish him well as he moves into a new phase of his career and are happy that he and Kelly will remain in Charleston."

Simpson, whose wife is an associate athletics director at The Citadel, plans to pursue an opportunity as a teaching pro in the Charleston area.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed working at The Citadel for the past 10 years," said Simpson. "The Citadel gave me an opportunity to coach for many years, and for that I am truly thankful. I wish the best to the future of Citadel Tennis."

A search for a men's tennis head coach will begin immediately. For more information on Bulldog Tennis, visit the new official website of The Citadel Athletics at www.CitadelSports.com.
