Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel Football team announced their team captains for the 2011 season on Thursday.
Senior linebacker Tolu Akindele, fifth-year senior slot back Rickey Anderson, redshirt sophomore defensive tackle Derek Douglas and sophomore quarterback Ben Dupree have been named the captains for the 2011 squad.
Akindele returns as captain for a second consecutive season as the second team All-SoCon preseason selection racked up a team-high 80 tackles last year along with an interception at No. 23 Arizona, 4.0 tackles for a loss, three forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, three quarterback hits, two pass deflections and a pass break-up.
Anderson comes back for his fifth year after fighting off injury in his three previous seasons. He rushed for 108 yards on 18 attempts in limited action last season. In the season finale at Samford, Anderson rushed for 37 yards on four carries and caught a critical 55-yard pass on a double reverse to set up the game-winning touchdown.
Douglas competed in all 11 contests a year ago and slotted as the starting right tackle on the defensive line on the preseason depth chart. He picked up 41 tackles, 3.5 sacks and forced a fumble in 2010 while recording a pair of sacks against Chowan in the season-opener.
Dupree split time between quarterback and slot back in 2011 as a freshman. He rushed for 187 yards on 67 carries and a touchdown on the season. He scored the game-winning touchdown on an eight-yard run at Samford to end the 2010 season while earning SoCon Freshman of the Week honors in the process.
The Bulldogs' season-opener will take place at home on Saturday, Sept. 3 against Jacksonville at Johnson Hagood Stadium. Tickets are available in The Citadel ticket office for the 6 p.m. matchup against the Dolphins.
