Citadel Volleyball Closes Out 2013 Season

Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel volleyball team closes out the 2013 season this weekend when it hosts Southern Conference rivals Appalachian State and Western Carolina at McAlister Field House.

The meeting with Appalachian State (17-11 overall, 8-6 SoCon), set to begin Friday evening at 6 p.m., will serve as senior night for Katie Briggs and Erin Bucherl.

It will also mark the last time that the two teams will square off as members of the SoCon, as the Mountaineers are departing for the Sun Belt Conference following the 2013-14 athletic season. ASU has five players with more than 200 kills, including Anna Wagner (405 kills) who leads the way for the Mountaineers.

The final match of the season takes place on Saturday at 4 p.m. when sixth-place Western Carolina (17-11, 7-7) visits McAlister Field House. The Catamounts turnaround season has been sparked by the play of Caitlin Piechota (286 kills) and Carrie Minogue (281 kills).

The Bulldogs (5-26, 0-14 SoCon) have a combined seven victories over Appalachian State and Western Carolina in program history. The Dogs are led offensively by the duo of Bailey Kernodle (158 kills) and Briggs (157). Meanwhile, Bucherl, who has a program single-season record 402 digs, and Lauren Hurt (37 solo blocks) anchor the defense.
