Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel wrestling team finished up its annual season-opening tournament, The Citadel Open, on Saturday at McAlister Field House. The event included over 275 wrestlers from 25 schools from around the Southeast region.
Two young Bulldogs won titles in their respective weight divisions as freshman Terrell Forbes captured first place in the 157-pound bracket while redshirt freshman Aaron Walker won the 149-pound division.
Last season's starters, Joaquin Marquez (125), Jack Duane (184) and Marshall Haas (197), completed their first matches of the season with third place finishes.
Forbes opened his collegiate career with two straight first-round pins over Blake Rounds (South Florida) and Joe Remaklus (UNC Pembroke) before capturing consecutive decisions to move into the first place match against NC State's Chad Pyke. Forbes earned the 6-2 decision over the Wolfpack grappler to capture first place.
Aaron Walker, who redshirted last season during his freshman year, opened the day with a fall in the second period over Duke's Joseph Abbate before collecting two decisions to move the 149-pounder into the semi-final round.
In that match, Walker topped Coker's Kevin Thompson II by technical fall at the 6:45 mark, 24-8, moving him into the finals match against NC State's Benjamin Hefner where he won by major decision (11-3) to earn the title for his respective weight division.
The Citadel heads to Blacksburg, Va., next weekend for the Hokie Open before returning to Charleston to open its dual slate against Anderson on Nov. 16 at 2 p.m.
Below are the results for all of The Citadel's wrestlers, both attached and unattached. Unattached wrestlers' results do not count toward official season results, but do toward NCAA qualification and matches against non-college competitors (NRVWC for example) do not count for official season results nor toward NCAA qualification. Matches against non-Division I wrestlers do not count toward NCAA qualification, either, but do count toward official season results.
