Hughston Armstrong's Catch vs. Appalachian State Voted Top SoCon Moment of 2013

Armstrong's Catch

Spartanburg, S.C. - Hughston Armstrong's highlight-reel catch, which resulted in a double play to wrap up The Citadel's 8-6 win over Appalachian State in the semifinals of the Southern Conference tournament, has been named the SoCon Moment from 2013 as voted on by fans of the league's schools through Facebook.

With the Bulldogs clinging to a two-run lead in the bottom of the ninth, Appalachian State's Dillon Dobson drove a line drive into the gap in right center. Armstrong, who was shading Dobson to left, made an all-out sprint and dive to make the catch. He immediately got to his feet and threw the ball back in, doubling up Michael Pierson at first to send The Citadel into the title game.

The Bulldogs faced Elon in the championship game of the tournament the following day but saw their rally fall just short in a 6-5 loss to the Phoenix.

Rounding out the top five were: 2) Georgia Southern's first win over an FBS school, a 26-20 victory at Florida; 3) Western Carolina snapping a 26-game SoCon football losing streak with a 27-24 overtime win over Elon; 4) Elon's victory over Clemson in penalty kicks in the NCAA men's soccer tournament; and 5) Elon's double overtime win to claim its third straight SoCon men's soccer title.
