Southern Scuffle Website
Charleston, S.C. – The Citadel wrestling team will kick off 2014 by competing in the Southern Scuffle hosted by Chattanooga. The Southern Scuffle, one of the largest in-season tournaments in college wrestling, will host 500 wrestlers from around the country at McKenzie Arena on Jan. 1-2.
Earlier today the 2014 Southern Scuffle preseeds were announced and three Bulldogs are seeded in the tournament.
Matthew Frisch, who recently moved weight classes from 157 to 149, is seeded ninth, while Turtogtokh Luvsandorj, who is currently ranked 13th in the country at 174, earned the seventh spot and will wrestle in the 165-pound division for the first time since capturing second place at the Southern Conference Tournament back in 2011.
Ugi Khishignyam will wrestle unattached and earned the fifth seed at 141. Khishignyam took second place at last year's Scuffle and went on to become the Bulldogs' highest finishing wrestler at the 2013 NCAA Championship with a fourth place finish.
The tournament will feature top contenders including No. 1 Penn State, No. 2 Minnesota, No. 4 Oklahoma State and No. 7 Cornell. Penn State is the three-time defending Scuffle champion. The Bulldogs took 11th place at the Scuffle last season.
The Bulldogs will hit the mat as a team for the first time since the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Dec. 6-7. Frisch wrestled to a second place finish at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Dec. 22.
