Previewing The Citadel – Chattanooga Football Game
Chattanooga holds a 27-17-2 edge in a series which dates all the way back to 1926 when the Mocs topped the Bulldogs, 6-3, in the first of 46 meetings. The two historic teams have met every year since 1968 with the exception of 1974 and 1984. The Mocs' first season as a member of the Southern Conference was 1977.Â
The Bulldogs and Mocs have earned five wins apiece over the last 10 seasons with the visiting team coming away with the win in the last two.
The Mocs got the 28-10 win in last year's contest at Johnson Hagood Stadium while the Bulldogs completed their biggest comeback in program history at Finley Stadium in 2011. Down 27-0 at the half, The Citadel stormed back and scored 28 unanswered points in the second half to collect the 28-27 victory in Chattanooga.Â
The Citadel is 4-4 under Coach Kevin Higgins when coming off of a bye week, including a 3-3 record on the road after the break. The Citadel has only played Chattanooga once under Higgins following a week off. Â In 2007 the Bulldogs topped the Mocs, 41-16, at Finley Stadium.
Chattanooga is coming off a 20-9 victory over Elon to improve its record to 5-2 on the season with a conference mark of 3-1 and enters Saturday in the midst of a three-game winning streak. The Citadel last played on Oct. 12 in Statesboro, Ga., when the Eagles topped the Bulldogs, 28-21.
Derek Douglas Moves up in Career TFL Category
Three-year captain Derek Douglas moved into ninth place in the tackle for loss category on Oct. 12 against Georgia Southern.
Douglas has 35.5 career tackles for loss and passed Trevar Broughton (2004-07). The redshirt senior needs one to move past Sedrick Brown (1978-81) for eight and just 1.5 to tie George Milton (1981-84) for sixth.
The senior had 7.5 during his freshman season, 14.5 as a sophomore and racked up eight last year despite missing four games due to injury.
Douglas' sack against Western Carolina on Sept. 14 moved him into a tie for sixth in school history with 13 for his career. Â He is tied with Hall of Famer Scott Thompson and former teammate Chris Billingslea and has a chance to crack the top three by the end of his career.

Soccer Goes 2-0 on Road Trip to Samford & UTC
Ruth Leiva and Nicole Levermann scored first half goals to stake The Citadel to a 2-0 lead, and the Bulldogs went on to a 3-1 victory over Chattanooga to complete a Southern Conference weekend sweep.Â
The Citadel added to its 3-2 win over then-first place Samford on Friday to move into solid contention for a berth in the SoCon playoffs. The Bulldogs swept a two-game conference weekend for the third time in school history and first since accomplishing the feat twice in 2010.
The win was the fourth in the past five seasons for The Citadel over Chattanooga.
Leiva got The Citadel offense started against the Mocs in the 25th minute when she scored her fourth goal of the season, beating the Chattanooga goalkeeper with a one-on-one move. The senior found the net for the ninth time in her career, good for a tie for ninth in school history.Â
Fellow senior Levermann continued her outstanding weekend with her third goal of the road trip six minutes later, taking a corner kick from Lea Raedle and heading it past the keeper. The assist was the seventh of the year for freshman Raedle, tying Vanessa Aponte's total from last year for the school's single-season record. Raedle is already tied for fourth in career assists in school history.
Chattanooga got back in the game in the 60th minute on a corner kick. But the Bulldogs answered in the 78th minute when Ana Mesa scored for the second time this season. The Mocs had three shots in the final three minutes, but Naomi Carter stopped two of them.Â
On Friday evening in Birmingham, Ala., Levermann scored two goals and Raedle tallied the game-winner to lead The Citadel to a 3-2 victory over Southern Conference leader Samford.
The Citadel defeated Samford for the first time in seven all-time meetings and handed the host Bulldogs their first home loss of the season. Samford had lost only to Furman, Texas and Memphis and boasted wins over Tennessee, Auburn and Vanderbilt.Â
Levermann gave The Citadel leads of 1-0 and 2-1, the latter five minutes into the second half, but both times Samford responded, including a goal that knotted the game at two less than a minute after Levermann's second score.
The Bulldogs eventually took the lead for good in the 59th minute when Raedle scored off an assist by Ana Mesa to make it 3-2. Samford took 11 shots the rest of the way, but Naomi Carter stopped six of them to secure the victory.Â
Samford outshot The Citadel, 26-5, but Carter was equal to the task with 12 saves, increasing the freshman goalkeeper's SoCon leading total to 130. One of her saves came on a penalty kick attempt in the first half with The Citadel holding on to a 1-0 lead after Levermann's first goal of the night.

Nicole Levermann Selected SoCon Women's Soccer Player of the Week
Senior forward Nicole Levermann has been named the Southern Conference women's soccer player of the week after leading the Bulldogs to a pair of important road wins at Samford and Chattanooga.
Levermann is the second Citadel player to receive the award this season with Mariana Garcia chosen following the second week of the year. It is also the second time in her career and first since 2010 that Levermann has been honored by the league office.Â
Levermann scored three goals in the two games last week, including two in a victory over a Samford team which entered the contest in first place in the SoCon standings. She staked The Citadel to leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in a game the Bulldogs eventually won 3-2.
In the 3-1 victory over Chattanooga, the New Braunfels, Texas, product gave The Citadel a 2-0 lead with a goal in the 31st minute. The three-goal week gives Levermann five on the season, one shy of the team lead and also one away from tying her season high of six set as a freshman in 2010 when she was named second team All-SoCon.Â
Including a goal against Georgia Southern on Oct. 13, Levermann has four in the past three games to help shoulder some of the scoring load after the Bulldogs lost Garcia to a knee injury earlier this season.
Levermann has scored 17 goals in her career to move into fifth place in school history. She is also fourth in The Citadel record book with 129 shots, fifth with 60 shots on goal, sixth with 38 points and tied for second with four game-winning goals.
Volleyball Drops League Matches at App State and Western Carolina
On Saturday evening in Boone, NC, Appalachian State completed a three-set sweep of The Citadel by scores of 25-11, 25-19 and 25-16.
Sophomore Bailey Kernodle highlighted the Bulldogs' offensive attack with eight kills and a .438 hitting percentage. The Citadel was led defensively by Erin Bucherl (11 digs), Lauren Hurt (3 assisted blocks) and Mallory Moore (2 assisted blocks).Â
The Mountaineers used its home court advantage early in the first set, jumping to a 12-5 advantage. The Citadel broke serve and sliced the score to a half dozen. ASU tallied eight of the next 10 points, pushing the lead to 20-8, with Ise d'Angelo responsible for the lone Citadel strikes. The Mountaineers allowed just three Bulldog points to win the set, 25-11.
On Friday in Cullowhee, NC, Western Carolina completed a 3-0 (25-23, 25-9 and 25-14) victory over The Citadel. D'Angelo was the primary source of offense for The Citadel, finishing with nine kills. Kernodle added six kills as the Bulldogs recorded 26 as a unit. Kernodle also made her presence felt defensively with 10 digs, while Bucherl tallied 16.
The opening set was full of runs by each team. Western Carolina jumped out to a 7-4 lead following a series of kills, but the Bulldogs stormed back behind three kills by Katie Briggs to force an eventual 13-13 deadlock. WCU regrouped following a Citadel timeout and took a slim two-point lead, but Briggs again proved herself as the go-to player, forcing a 20-20 tie. A kill by d'Angelo and service ace by Bucherl provided a late 22-20 Citadel lead that was erased.

And Having Absolutely Nothing to Do with Athletics
We mentioned last week that for the third year in a row, Charleston ranked first in the U.S. as the top travel city for readers of Conde Nast Traveler magazine.
"With sand, sun, history, good food and friendly people, Charleston is a consistent hit with the travelers who venture to this 'gracious and beautiful' city. ... Nearby beaches and impressive architecture draw visitors, but it's the 'insanely nice' locals who enhance 'magnificent' bed and breakfasts and 'amazing shopping." ... 'A bucket list city.'"

He Said It:
"In our mission statement, it says 'developing leaders.' That's what we do. Everywhere you go on The Citadel's campus, it is about developing leaders.
One of the things our guys learn is before you lead, you must serve. That would be a typical standard for all of us. When our freshmen come in, the entire freshman year is about learning how to serve. You don't say a lot. You listen a lot and you make sure that you serve.
I tell our guys often, when I got the job with the Detroit Lions, I didn't go knocking on Coach (Steve) Mariucci's door on the first day and say 'Coach, I've got a great way of running this organization here in Detroit.' I kept my mouth shut. I did what I was supposed to do and, once you make a stand and do the things you need to do, then you have an opportunity to be a leader within that organization."
- Coach Kevin Higgins, to the assembly at the Orangeburg Touchdown Club on Oct. 17.
"If we look at the rest of the season like its spring practice, or whatever people are saying, we will go downhill. … If we keep our heads up and work hard, we can still have a winning season and still actually do something this season. … For a lot of us, this is our last time playing football, so we want to do the best we can do."
- Senior offensive tackle Devin Bice.
