
Buckiso, Walker Lead Bulldogs at Navy Classic

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Ty Buckiso (9-6) and Aaron Walker (9-3) each placed third individually at the Navy Classic to lead the Bulldogs on Saturday.
Buckiso went 4-1 in the 149-lb weight class, opening the tournament with a technical fall over Ohio's Nick Steed. Buckiso then defeated Delaware Valley's Rob Duxbury in the quarterfinals by major decision 12-0 to advance to the semis.
The junior was then defeated by a narrow 8-6 decision by eventual tournament champion Sahid Kargbo of George Mason. Buckiso won his final two matches over Indiana's Luke Blanton by technical fall and Kent State's Tim Rooney by a 6-4 decision in the third place match.
After winning his pool at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic, Walker continued to impress with a 5-1 record on Saturday. The graduate student opened with back-to-back pins of Delaware Valley's Sekou Harris at 6:28 and Brown's Willy McDonald at 4:03.
In the quarterfinals, Walker defeated Navy's Zack Elvin by major decision 17-7. Like Buckiso, Walker was then narrowly defeated 8-6 in the semifinals to enter the consolation bracket. Walker rebounded well, defeating Indiana's Jake Danishek 5-3 before winning his third place match over Navy's Zach Elvin by a 12-3 major decision.
The Bulldogs placed eighth as a team with 67 total points. Along with Buckiso and Walker, the team had two other placers in sophomores Patrick Kearney (5-8) and Sawyer Root (7-7).
Kearney finished the day with an even 3-3 record in the 125-lb weight class. He opened the day with a 13-6 decision over Navy's Noah Sirianni. After a defeat, Kearney then won by fall at 3:38 over George Mason's Trevor Mello followed by another pin of Brown's Trey Keeley at 1:27 to advance to the consolation semifinals. Kearney finished the day with two losses to place sixth in his weight class.
Root also placed sixth after going 3-3 at 197 pounds. He defeated Indiana's Norman Conley by a 4-2 decision to open the tournament, before falling 5-2 to Navy's Steban Cervantes. Root picked up consecutive major decision victories over Campbell's Willie Bivens and Navy's Josh Roetman to advance to the consolation semifinals. He then fell in his final two matches to take sixth place.
Andrew Szalwinski, Douglas Gudenburr (11-4) and Joe Bexley (6-6) each recorded two wins in their respective weight classes. Jason Carr (1-3) also added a victory for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs will next return to the mat on Dec. 4 at the Journeymen Tussle in Hempstead, New York. They will then wrestle for the final time in 2016 on Dec. 17 in a home dual meet against Northern Illinois.
