MEET RESULTS
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Citadel wrestling team fell 38-3 in a dual meet against Northern Illinois on Saturday at McAlister Field House.
The dual began at the 133 pound weight class with Andrew Szalwinski (6-10) facing NIU's Alijah Jeffery. Jeffery made quick work of the match, pinning Szalwinski 48 seconds into the first period.
Douglas Gudenburr (14-6) answered the pin with a victory over Anthony Rubino by a 4-1 decision to cut the deficit to 6-3. Gudenburr finished the dual with the lone victory for the Bulldogs as the Huskies took the remaining eight matches.
Aaron Walker (11-5) battled in action packed 157-lb match, falling to Caden McWhirter by a 15-11 decision. Walker trailed 7-0 after the first period, but answered with six straight points in the second to cut the deficit to 7-6.
Ruston Hill II (5-9) followed with another close loss by decision to Andrew Scott, falling 6-3 at 165 pounds. After back-to-back pins for the Huskies, Sawyer Root (9-9) took a close 2-1 loss to NIU's Shawn Scott at 197 pounds.
Joe Bexley (6-10) fell by decision 8-4 in the heavyweight division and Patrick Kearney (6-12) dropped an 8-2 decision at 125 pounds to wrap up the dual.
The Citadel next returns to the mat in 2017 at the Southern Scuffle on Jan. 1 and 2 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Bulldogs' next dual will be their first in SoCon play on Jan. 8 at Appalachian State.
