ST. LOUIS – The 2021 season came to an end for The Citadel heavyweight
Michael McAleavey Thursday evening at the NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Missouri.
McAleavey entered the tournament as the No. 23 seed and faced No. 10 Deonte Wilson (NC State) in the opening match. Neither wrestler was able to mount much offense through the first two periods. The score was tied 1-1 midway through the third period when Wilson was able to secure a takedown right before they went out of bounds. Wilson added the bonus point for the 4-1 victory.
In the consolation bracket, McAleavey found himself in another tight match against Sam Shuyler (Buffalo). Both wrestlers were able to fend off each other through the first two periods. McAleavey got the escape to start the third period to tie the match, 1-1.
With just over a minute to go in the match, there was a scramble where McAleavey nearly was able to secure a takedown. Both wrestlers had last second attempts, but neither was able to score, sending the match to overtime.
In the extra session. McAleavey was not able to fight off Shuyler's takedown and fell 3-1 in the extra period.
McAleavey's season came to a close with an overall record of 15-3.
